Oregon Arts Commission Awards Career Opportunity Grants to 10 Oregon Artists

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Drawing by Hibiki Miyazaki The Oregon Arts Commission announces 10 awards totaling $13,623 in the competitive Career Opportunity grant program. These awards provide support to individual artists who seek to take advantage of important opportunities to advance their careers through the development of artistic, business or professional skills. These may include exhibits in national and international venues, participation in conferences or workshops to expand their knowledge base.

Christine D'Arcy, the Arts Commission's executive director, observes "This investment in Oregon's artists helps stimulate creative activity throughout the state, and it's important to maintaining artists' creative small businesses. Many of the projects funded in this round will promote the work of Oregon artists around the world."

John Yeon`s Visitors Information Center Listed in National Register of Historic Places

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - John Yoen Information Center Located in Governor Tom McCall Park, John Yeon’s Visitor Information Center is Portland’s latest entry in the National Register of Historic Places.

Constructed in 1948, the Visitors Information Center is a singularly unique example of the work of recognized master architect John Yeon. One of Oregon’s most famous architects, Yeon is known as a pioneer of the Northwest Regional style of architecture. His Information Center is his only non-residential building still in existence, and was included as one of only 43 buildings in the Museum of Modern Art’s prestigious 1953 “Built in U.S.A.: Post-War Architecture” exhibit along with works by other know architects, Frank Lloyd Wright, Walter Gropius, Philip Johnson, and Richard Neutra.

Experience the thrill of victory and pounding defeat as high school robotics teams from throughout Oregon and Vancouver gather at OMSI for a day of mechanical madness at the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Showcase.

Families are encouraged to come get an up-close look at these 120-pound student-designed robots in action (and even test one out) in OMSI's Auditorium from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23. Entry to this event is included with regular museum admission.

(LAKE OSWEGO, Ore.) - Melvin Anthony (Tony) Murray Melvin Anthony (Tony) Murray was taken into custody without incident at a Hotel located at 4911 NE 82nd Avenue, Portland. Lake Oswego Police Detective Lee Ferguson followed up on several leads and located Mr. Murray staying at the location.

St. Mary`s Academy Teacher Kathy Mitchell Named Oregon Art Educator of the Year

Using art to educate and inspire students is a winning combination.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - St. Mary's Academy The Oregon Art Education Association (OAEA) named St. Mary's Academy art teacher and alumna Kathy Mitchell as the 2011 Oregon Art Educator of the Year. Mitchell will receive her award at the OAEA's fall conference on October 8 at the Portland Art Museum and be nationally recognized at the National Art Education Conference in Seattle in March.

Honored and humbled by the recognition, Mitchell attributes her success to a thriving and supportive fine arts department at St. Mary's where 56% of current students are enrolled in one of 15 art electives including Concert Choir, Music Theory/Composition, Piano Ensemble, Marian Singers, Dance and Theatre, among others.

Portland Police Investigate Stabbing In NW Portland

Detectives are responding and will continue the investigation.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Stabbing Investigation This evening, Tuesday September 28, 2010, at approximately 9:21 p.m., Portland Police officers responded to the 600 Block of Northwest 10th Avenue on the report of a stabbing.

Officers arrived in the area to find the 31-year-old male victim bleeding from the neck with a stab wound. The victim was transported to OHSU with a non-life-threatening injury.

Portland Police Investigating Homicide Downtown Victim Identified

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Homicide Investigation Portland Police Homicide Detectives have confirmed the identity of the homicide victim from early Sunday morning as 19-year-old Andre Dupree Payton of North Portland. Payton died of a gunshot wound after the shooting early Sunday at Northwest 2nd Avenue and Couch Street.
Detectives have interviewed more than a dozen witnesses so far in the investigation but still need to talk to more people. Officers responding to the original shooting scene estimate that there was 100-200 people on the street at the time.

At this point in the investigation, Detectives can say that more than a dozen gunshots were fired and that some of those shots hit cars and buildings in the area.
