May 3 to May 5 Events Explore Mexican and Mexican-American History in Oregon

An art exhibition, lectures and Cinco de Mayo celebration will take place in Portland

(PORTLAND, OR) - Mexico to Oregon “From Mexico to Oregon: History, Culture and Identity,” a series of events presented by the University of Oregon’s Latin American Studies Program, will take place May 3 to May 5 at the White Stag Block in Portland.

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Puebla, where the Mexican army defeated the French occupying forces on May 5, 1862.

2012 Minidoka Pilgrimage June 21 - June 24, 2012

Celebrating our 10th Annual Minidoka Pilgrimage and recognizing the 70th Anniversary signing of Executive Order 9066

(SEATTLE) - Sept '95 photo of ruins of Camp Minidoka in Idaho Seventy years ago, almost 13,000 people of Japanese-ancestry, many of whom were American citizens, were removed from their homes and sent to a desolate “incarceration camp" near Twin Falls, Idaho.

This summer, the 10th pilgrimage will take place with former internees, their families, and friends - from Seattle, Portland and across the nation - to the former Minidoka Camp in Idaho.

Some Districts Resist State Open Enrollment Change, While Others Embrace it

The Eugene School District, for example, opened up 1,725 seats to new students, while it currently serves 16,000.

(PORTLAND, OR) - Oregon School enrollment Oregon K-12 students have until April 1 to apply for transfers to public schools that opted into the state’s new open enrollment law.

School boards and districts had until March 1, 2012 to decide whether or not they would accept new students from outside their district based on the recent open enrollment policy put into place by the legislature.

Medical Teams International has sent over 45 volunteer medical teams to Uganda to address immediate needs and to mobilize long-term health initiatives.

(PORTLAND, OR) - Nodding Disease Medical Teams International has launched an emergency response campaign to fund efforts to address nodding disease in northern Uganda.

This mysterious disease only attacks children and has no known cause or cure.
