1,000 Salem-Keizer Students Protest Immigration Reform

(SALEM) - Oregon State Capitol building Over 1,000 Salem-Keizer high and middle school students walked out of their classes on Monday.

The students marched to the steps of the Oregon State Capitol to join together in a rally protesting a bill by the U.S. House cracking down on illegal immigration.

Salem-Keizer District spokesman Jay Remy says the students who left campus will face either detention or suspension in accordance with district's policy on unexcused absences or truancy.

Chemawa School Prepares for Spring Pow-Wow

An opportunity to support the Native American Youth groups at Chemawa Indian School happens May 5th and 6th.

(SALEM) - Chemawa school sign One of the most historic institutions in the Salem/Keizer area, the Chemawa Indian School, is preparing for its 122nd Spring Pow-Wow. Organizers like Crystal Boyd of the Chemawa School, say it is a fun time for all, `We are very excited. We expect around a thousand people, there are 440 students at the school alone.`

Police Make Arrest in Salem Grocery Store Parking Lot Robberies

(SALEM) - Authorities in Salem have made an arrest in a string of robbery and kidnapping incidents that occurred last month in northeast Salem grocery store parking lots.

Lt. Bill Kohlmeyer says detectives arrested 18-year-old Miguel Angel Mendoza-Castro at his home on Friday.

Kohlmeyer says Mendoza-Castro approached his victims at the Lancaster Food-4-Less and at the Lancaster Grocery Outlet and demanded money.

Marion County Courthouse Repair Costs Now at $12 Million Dollars

Plans are to re-occupy the building starting in the basement and moving up floor by floor as repairs and upgrades are completed. Some employees are expected to begin setting up work spaces in May.
