Santiam Bicycle, Venti`s Cafe to Host Cranksgiving Event

(SALEM, Oregon) - Cranksgiving Food Drive Poster Avid bicyclist Cory Heintz is partnering with Santiam Bicycle and Venti’s Café to organize what may be Salem’s first Cranksgiving food drive on Saturday, Nov. 13. The event will benefit Marion-Polk Food Share.

“It’s a good time for a good cause,” said Heintz, who first participated in a Cranksgiving ride when he lived in Des Moines, Iowa. Apparently, the event originated in New York City in 1999.

Oregonians Encouraged to Test Smoke Alarms When Changing Their Clocks

(SALEM, Ore.) - Daylight savings clock 1918 from wikipedia Oregon State Fire Marshal Randy Simpson urges residents to test their smoke alarms when changing their clocks to standard time Sunday, November 7th.

Many Oregonians have smoke alarms with 10-year batteries so the old slogan, ‘Change your clock, Change your battery' may not be correct for all households.

21st Annual Angel Tree Opportunity-YWCA Salem

(SALEM, Ore.) - YWCA Salem Monday kicks off the YWCA Salem Resource Assistance Program’s 21st annual Angel Tree Opportunity. Last year the Angel Tree helped over 85 households to fully celebrate the holiday season.

Through the kindness and generosity of members of our community 85 angels were collected from the decorated tree in the lobby of the YWCA Salem. Each angel represented a need of a child or an adult and was filled and returned to the YWCA Salem.

Sixth Albany Community Summit on Homelessness

(ALBANY, Oregon) - Salem-News.com The sixth Albany area summit on homelessness will happen Wednesday, from 9 a.m.-noon at Albany City Hall, 333 Broadalbin Street SW. Representatives of organizations and agencies that work directly with Albany's homeless and low-income residents will attend, with this year's focus on the "new homeless:" those in or near homelessness due to the ongoing economic downturn.

Rick Crager, deputy director of Oregon Housing and Community Services, will give a keynote address. Groups and individuals involved in initiatives in the Albany area will give updates on those projects including supportive housing for women in transition; a new children's dental clinic; and the Adult Services Team that works with individuals or couples who have been hard to house.

Canby Rodeo Court Tryouts - Royals Crowned

(CANBY, Ore.) - Princess Kelsey Schuetz, Queen Kelsey Downs, and Princess Haley Marsh On Saturday, ten talented horsewomen tested their skills in an effort to be crowned part of the 2011 Canby Rodeo Court. Over 40 spectators came out to watch these lovely ladies give speeches, answer interview questions, and display their horsemanship skills via a reining pattern, an arena queen run, and flag carrying.

This year's Royal Rodeo Court will consist of Queen Kelsey Downs of Canby, Princess Kelsey Schuetz of Mulino, and Princess Haley Marsh of Milwaukie. The first runner up is Brittnie Gartner of Newberg.

Chemeketa Community College Hosts 28th Annual College and Career Night

(SALEM, Ore.) - Chemeketa Community College Logo Salem - Keizer students will have an opportunity to attend a free college and career fair at Chemeketa Community College. For over 25 years, the College/Career Fair has been an annual tradition and attracts over 800 career bound students.

In 2009, 64 colleges and universities from across the nation participated in the event and this year participation is expected to greater. In addition, trade schools and apprenticeship information will be available from such companies as Bonneville Power Administration and Portland General Electric.

Special Olympics Oregon Fall Regional Games Held Statewide

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - soor logo Several communities throughout Oregon will once again host Special Olympics Oregon Fall Regional Games on consecutive weekends in Late October and November. More than 2,000 athletes will compete in one of 10 competitions in seven cities. Hundreds of coaches, volunteers and families will join in to support competitors.

The Fall Regional Games, presented by Les Schwab Tire Centers, officially begins Sunday, October 31 with a bowling competition at Lakeshore Lanes in Albany. Regional competitions continue the following weekend with Corvallis hosting aquatics on Saturday, November 6 and soccer and volleyball on Sunday, November 7. Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham will also host aquatics on November 7. November 13 & 14 will conclude the fall season with bowling competitions in Beaverton, Bend, Hermiston, Medford and Portland.
