Portland Woman Arrested After Stealing Passerby’s Vehicle

The victim learned the hard way, don’t pick-up strangers.

(CORVALLIS) - Photo: Andrea Even. Corvallis, Oregon Police Corvallis police arrested a Portland woman on Wednesday after she stole a vehicle from a passing motorist she asked to give her a ride.

Police say 33-year-old Andrea Even got into the man’s car and told him she had a gun.

She ordered the man to surrendered his vehicle and made him get out of the vehicle near the intersection of SW Monroe Ave and SW 4th Street.

Even then drove west on Philomath Boulevard, continuing through Philomath onto westbound Hwy 20; meanwhile, the Corvallis Regional Communications Center received several calls from citizens regarding her erratic driving.

International Researchers Discover Rich Methane Field Off The Coast of India

Researchers said the energy potential is still unknown.

(CORVALLIS) - Bay of Bengal off India An international team of scientists looking for gas hydrates off the coast of India has discovered a pair of methane hydrate reservoirs buried in the sediment below the Bay of Bengal, and though the idea of a new energy source is tantalizing, researchers say the technology does not yet exist to make these reservoirs commercially feasible.

A similar field of gas hydrates was found off the coast of Oregon a few years ago, said Marta Torres, a marine geochemist at Oregon State University and an investigator on the India and Oregon expeditions.

Former Dow Chemical Chairman Pledges $3 Million to Oregon State

Lundeen has worked to improve OSU’s library since the 1980s when he and his late wife, Betty, served as co-chairs of the campaign to renovate the old structure into the acclaimed Valley Library.

(CORVALLIS) - Oregon State University Robert Lundeen, the retired chairman of Dow Chemical, has pledged $3 million to support an array of programs at Oregon State University, a gift which reflects his lifelong pursuit of learning that began with his OSU education.

Lundeen’s donation will fund science and engineering scholarships, create faculty development awards for OSU scientists and librarians, and provide additional resources to the College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences and to the College of Science.

Police Seeking Information, Witnesses After Man Struck by Projectile

Police believe the man was shot by either a .22 caliber bullet or air rifle pellet.

(CORVALLIS) - Yellow crime scene tape Corvallis police are asking for the public’s help in locating who may have shot a Corvallis man on Saturday.

Just before 6:00 PM a Corvallis man was struck by an unidentified projectile in the left thigh. The man was in an alleyway in the 300 block of NW 25th Street when the incident occurred.

The man was transferred to the Good Samaritan Hospital Emergency Room by ambulance.

Oregon State Hosting Annual Conference on Oregon Health Issues

Oregon’s Public Health Director Susan Allan will talk about the state of Oregon’s health.

(CORVALLIS) - Oregon State University The future health needs of Oregonians will be examined during a two-day conference “Public Health – Today and Tomorrow,” scheduled for Oct. 23-24 at Oregon State University.

Held at OSU's LaSells Stewart Center, the meeting serves as the annual conference for the Oregon Public Health Association.

The conference is co-hosted by the OSU College of Health and Human Sciences’ Department of Public Health.

Benton And Linn County Health Organizations Team Up to Provide Flu Vaccinations

Flu vaccine supplies are expected to be adequate for this year’s flu season and no shortages are expected.

(CORVALLIS) - flu shots The Flu Vaccine Coalition, a group of Benton and Linn County public health officials, health care providers and pharmacies, is teaming up again this year to distribute flu vaccinations for residents.

“The Centers for Disease Control expect the flu vaccination supply to reach 100 million doses, which is the highest in history," said Charlie Fautin, deputy administrator of the Benton County Health Department. "We urge everyone over 6 months of age to get vaccinated against the flu every year."

Although most people recover from the flu within several days, some are more susceptible to complications from the flu due to age, health conditions or other factors. The following populations should be among the first to receive flu vaccinations:

Dead Bird Found in Benton County Tests Positive For West Nile Virus

In Oregon, the first reported case of WNV was in 2004. This year, DHS has reported 62 human cases of WNV.

(CORVALLIS) - Mosquitos Benton County public health officials announced Tuesday that Oregon State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory has confirmed a dead bird has tested positive for the West Nile Virus.

Oregon State Students, Engineers Helping to Bring Clean Water to El Salvador

The OSU students have made two trips to the Salvadoran villages of El Naranjito and Las Mercedes, and are holding a benefit banquet on Friday, to raise money for the project.

(CORVALLIS) - Engineers Without Borders Students from the Oregon State University chapter of Engineers Without Borders are raising money, pooling their engineering expertise and collaborating with professional engineers to bring clean water to two isolated villages in El Salvador.

“Right now, the villagers have to walk long distances over steep, rough terrain to reach potable water sources,” said Kelly Wilson, an OSU sophomore from Aurora, Or., who is studying chemical engineering and serves as secretary of Engineers Without Borders-OSU.
