Oregon State Vice-President Arrested on DUII, Assault Charges

Police said that John Cassady's blood alcohol content was 0.18 percent, more than twice the legal limit.

(CORVALLIS) - Oregon State University vice president for research John Cassady Oregon State University vice president for research John Cassady was arrested last month on drunken driving and assault charges after crashing his car into two of his neighbors' garages.

The 68-year-old was booked at the Benton County jail and charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants, criminal mischief, reckless endangerment and fourth-degree assault stemming from the Nov. 18th incident.

OSU Alum to Pilot Space Shuttle, Help Rewire Space Station

Oefelein was a naval aviator, served on the U.S.S. Nimitz and attended the U.S. Navy Fighter Weapons School, TOPGUN.

(CORVALLIS) - An electrical engineering graduate from Oregon State University who grew up in Alaska learning to fly bush planes will make his first journey into space as pilot of the space shuttle Discovery, scheduled for liftoff on Dec. 7th.

William Oefelein, who graduated from OSU in 1988 before becoming a pilot in the U.S. Navy, didn’t dream of being an astronaut growing up, but he loved to explore.

Oefelein was selected by NASA in June, 1998, and was originally scheduled to pilot the space shuttle in 2003.

Fatal Traffic Crash Tuesday on Hwy 34

Both vehicles ended up in the ditch on the north side of the roadway

(CORVALLIS) - fatal car accident logo A 19-year old Newport woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash Tuesday morning on Highway 34 about three miles east of Corvallis.

Official say that on November 21st at about 8:40 AM, a 1992 Geo Metro was eastbound on Highway 34 near milepost 3 when it crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a westbound 2006 Honda Pilot.

The operator of the Honda, Leslie Ann Howard, age 61, of Albany, was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis with non-life threatening injuries.

Oregon State Fraternity Member Arrested in Shooting Incident

Investigation of this case is continuing and the findings are being reviewed by the Benton County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.

(CORVALLIS) - Corvallis police, along with Oregon State Police, and Benton County Sheriff Deputies served a search warrant at 331 NW 26th Street, the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity house in Corvallis.

The search warrant allowed officers to seize evidence connected to the shooting of Dennis Sanderson in the alley east of the fraternity, which occurred on October 14th.

During the subsequent search, officers seized a firearm believed to have been used in the shooting.

OSU College of Forestry Celebrates a Century of Growth And Change

Major efforts are now in place to increase the numbers of women and minorities involved in forestry careers.

(CORVALLIS) - Oregon forest The College of Forestry at Oregon State University now has a student enrollment of more than 600, about 15,000 acres of college forests, 5,500 graduates and annual expenditures of more than $26 million, including 46 percent from grants and contracts.

The first degree program that began in 1906, however, was more modest.

There were four students in the first graduating class at what was then called Oregon Agricultural College, including T.J. Starker, a pioneer in the development of the Oregon forest products industry and whose family later sponsored the Starker Lecture Series that is prominent to this day.

Oregon State Researchers Discover World’s Oldest Bee

Researchers say the finding is key to learning more about the evolution of flowering plants.

(CORVALLIS) - Oldest bee on record Researchers at Oregon State University have discovered the oldest bee ever known, a 100-million-year-old specimen preserved in almost lifelike form in amber and an important link to help explain the rapid expansion of flowering plants during that distant period. The species, named Melittosphex burmensis, is long extinct. The findings and their evolutionary significance are outlined in an article to be published this week in the journal Science.
