A Tax System that Matches Oregon Values

It's time for Oregon legislators to establish a new set of priorities for Oregon, priorities that better match the values of Oregonians.

(SILVERTON, Ore.) - Aerial photo of Oregon State Capitol by Tim King This tax season, a minimum wage worker who was employed full-time last year and raising one child will pay about $321 in state income taxes. That's equivalent to the cost of about a month's worth of food based on Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

For a single parent working at minimum wage $321 is a lot of money, especially when you compare it to the income tax bill that Intel Corporation, with $9 billion in profits, likely paid last year: 10 bucks.

President`s Proposed Budget Cuts Would Hurt Oregonians and Shift Costs to State

Under the President's plan, Oregon would lose about $23 million for adult education and worker training programs.

(SILVERTON, Ore.) - President Bush's proposed 2009 budget would cut over $200 million in federal funding for a slew of social programs in Oregon, shifting costs to the state at time when a weakening economy has shrunk state revenues, according to the Oregon Center for Public Policy.

The proposed budget would slash about $20 billion in spending nationally on domestic "discretionary" programs -- those that must be approved each year -- outside of homeland security, while making permanent all of the 2001 and 2003 Bush tax cuts.

Oregon Lottery Scratch-its: The New Joe Camel

The Oregon Lottery calls the scheme a "promotional program" and is using shills from the media to maximize its slick PR campaign.

(SILVERTON, Ore.) - Joe Camel Years ago, facing legal and political pressure for marketing cancer sticks to youth, R.J. Reynolds put out to pasture its infamous Joe Camel mascot. Today's "Scratch-it for Schools" campaign by the Oregon State Lottery may not sport a character with a hump, but its cynicism brings back memories of old Joe.

Economic Stimulus Package Leaves Oregon Exposed

Oregon could lose about $90 million in revenue if bonus depreciation is in the stimulus package.

(SILVERTON, Ore.) - Oregon State Capitol by Tim King, Salem-News.com While the tentative deal reached yesterday between the White House and House leaders on an economic stimulus package contains laudable elements, Oregonians should worry because it fails to provide for direct federal aid to states and threatens to reduce Oregon's revenue stream, according to the Oregon Center for Public Policy.

"Oregon would be in a much stronger position to weather a recession if the economic stimulus package shored up key state services," said OCPP policy analyst Janet Bauer. "It would keep state money flowing through the economy, providing a stimulus, and help keep the most vulnerable Oregonians on their feet."
