(SILVERTON, Ore.) - Police say a 79-year old Silverton man received non-life threatening injuries Thursday morning when he was struck by a car while attempting to walk across Highway 214 in Silverton. Preliminary investigation indicates that this morning at approximately 6:30 AM, 79-year old Martin Nelson of Silverton, was attempting to walk across Highway 214 from the local McDonald's restaurant. While crossing the highway from west to east with the aide of a walker, a northbound 2000 Ford Escort driven by 41-year old Michael King of Silverton came upon Nelson in the northbound lane and swerved to the left to miss him. The car's side mirror struck Mr. Nelson and knocked him to the pavement. It is reported that King immediately stopped to help the injured man. Local fire personnel responded to begin medical treatment. Mr. Nelson was transported by LifeFlight to Oregon Health Sciences University for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Highway 214 is a three-lane highway with north and southbound lanes separated by a center continuous left turn lane. At the location of this crash about 1/4 mile west of the intersection with Hobart Road, there is no crosswalk. Oregon State Police troopers from the Salem Area Command office are continuing the investigation. No citations have been issued. Silverton Police Department, Silverton Fire District personnel, and Mt. Angel Police Department assisted at the scene. One lane was closed for about 40 minutes.
