Winter Break is The Perfect Time to Get Your Child`s School Vaccinations

Last school year, 3,466 exclusion orders were issued to children with incomplete records.

(SALEM) - The upcoming winter break is a great time to get children in for their vaccinations. Lines are short and making an appointment is easy.

Waiting until exclusion orders are issued makes it difficult to get children in for vaccinations.

Children without completed immunization records will be excluded from attendance at schools and day care facilities on February 21st, 2007.

School Based Health Center Opens at Hoover Elementary

The center is open every weekday morning from 7:45 AM – noon.

(SALEM) - photo: School Based Health Center ribbon cutting Last week, a new health center opened on the Hoover Elementary School campus.

The center is run by Marion County Health Department and it serves students enrolled at Hoover Elementary or any children belonging to the Boys & Girls Club of Marion-Polk Counties.

The center provides physical examinations; vision, dental and blood pressure screenings; health and wellness education; prescription medications; immunizations; and diagnosis and treatment of illnesses in a cost-effective manner.

OSD Lockdown Ends

Students secured while police search for reported gunmen

(SALEM) - Oregon School for the Deaf The Oregon School for the Deaf went on alert today, with the report of a gunman on campus.

At about 1:30 PM, a call from an unknown person to 911 was received through a service used for deaf callers.

The caller said that two unidentified males with firearms were on the campus grounds of OSD in Salem.

The school grounds were secured, buildings searched, and nothing was found.

91% Percent of Classes in Oregon Are Taught by Highly Qualified Teachers

94% of classes in the Salem-Keizer School District were taught by teachers who met the federal designation, up from 90% in 2004-05.

(SALEM) - Oregon Governor Ted Kuulongoski visiting Salem area kids State Schools Superintendent Susan Castillo announced Wednesday that 91% of all classes taught in Oregon’s public schools during 2005-06 have a highly qualified teacher, according to the federally required definition under the No Child Left Behind Act.

There are 38 Oregon school districts that have reached 100% of their classes taught by highly qualified teachers, and more than half of school districts made gains in the percentage of core classes taught by highly qualified teachers.

Salem Police, S-K School District Want to Remind Parents of Daytime Curfew For Kids

Youth under 18 years of age seen off campus during school hours may be stopped and questioned by police officers.

(SALEM) - Schoolgirl Salem police would like to remind parents that Salem has a daytime curfew for kids under the age of 18.

The Salem-Keizer School District is working with law enforcement and the Juvenile Department to keep kids from skipping school.

Falls City Schools Closed Tuesday

Concerns over local paving projects mean a day off for kids and teachers.

(FALLS CITY) - Falls City High School The Falls City Elementary and High School will be closed all day on Tuesday.

School officials say the school closure is due to safety concerns, while crews are paving Prospect Street in the immediate area of the schools.

School at these two Falls City schools will resume on Wednesday with regular hours.

Oregon`s 2004-05 Dropout Rate Dips to 4.2%, Salem-Keizer Rate Rises

A total of 7,318 students dropped out of high school during 2004-05, down from 7,864 dropouts in 2003-04.

(SALEM) - High schooler The Oregon Department of Education announced Wednesday that Oregon’s statewide dropout rate for the 2004-05 school year was 4.2%, down from 4.6% in 2003-04.

“I won’t be satisfied until Oregon’s dropout rate hits zero,” Castillo said. “Until then, there is good news in this report: dropout rates for all groups decreased. The greatest drop was for African American students, but all student groups showed decreases. Staying in school is fundamental to student success, and it is important that the rate continue to decline.”

Chalkboard Project Releases It’s 2007 Legislative Proposals

The group is calling for targeted investments in proven reforms, efficiency savings, bigger stability fund, and no new taxes.

(PORTLAND) - School chalkboard Oregon schools must transform the way they support educators and their youngest students, while renewing their efforts to save money and show citizens how money is spent.

In return, the state must provide a guaranteed level of school spending that provides more financial and service stability from year to year.

Those are the key legislative action items the independent, non-partisan Chalkboard Project will focus on during the 2007 legislative session.
