Shot Fired at Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution Kills Inmate

The institution is currently on lockdown status and visiting is canceled until further notice.

(PENDLETON, Ore.) - Today, an Oregon Department of Corrections Correctional Officer fired a shot to prevent imminent serious bodily injury to an inmate being assaulted at Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution (EOCI).

The Correctional Officer fired the shot from a yard tower after two inmates who were assaulting a third inmate failed to disengage.

First Prison Beekeeping Program Starts at Coffee Creek Correctional Facility

This new program will keep inmates buzzing with intrigue.

(WILSONVILLE, Ore.) - A group of honey bees arrived at Coffee Creek Correctional Facility late last month to take up residence in three hives that will be cared for by inmate workers as part of the first prison beekeeping program in Oregon.

The hives each contain one queen and up to 5,000 bees, which include drones and worker bees. Since all worker bees are female, it seems somehow appropriate that this brand new program should begin at Oregon's only women's prison.

Governor Establishes Inmate Re-Entry Council to Reduce Criminal Recidivism

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski last week issued an executive order creating the Governor’s Re-Entry Council, a statewide leadership group to work collaboratively on improving the success and safety of inmates’ transitions back into society after they complete their sentences.

OSU Students Attend Class Inside Oregon State Penitentiary

Portland State University and the University of Oregon are also participating in Inside-Out.

(SALEM) - A group of Oregon State University students taking a Public Policy course with men in the state’s only maximum-security prison are among the first on the West Coast to participate in The Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program, a national program based at Temple University in Philadelphia.

OSU’s Michelle Inderbitzin, an assistant professor in sociology, received an L.L. Stewart Faculty Development Award in 2005 to receive training in The Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program.

Her goal was to teach a class inside a prison that would include OSU students as well as incarcerated students.

Dangerous Sex Offender Sought by Police

Olonzie Jr. Clemman did not return to the Work Center on Saturday.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Marion County Sheriff Parole and Probation Deputies are asking for the public’s help in locating a twice convicted sex offender who did not return to the Marion County Work Center over the weekend.

57-year-old Olonzie Jr. Clemman is living at the work center at 4000 Aumsville Highway SE as a condition of his post-prison supervision. However, Clemman did not report to the center Saturday.
