Feb-14-2012 19:44TweetFollow @OregonNews Nearly 80 Oregon Prison Inmates Died Between 2010-2011- Most 'Unreported' Says APTim King Salem-News.comAP reports: "Most Oregon prison deaths unreported to public; 79 inmates died in custody on 2010-2011".
(SALEM) - A new story about Oregon prison deaths by The Associated Press, Most Oregon prison deaths unreported to public; 79 inmates died in custody on 2010-2011 confirms many things we have reported, albeit very much without support from other Oregon media, until now. The AP article published out of the Midwest, in Columbus, Indiana, was sourced from Salem's daily newspaper, the Statesman Journal, which until now, has been anything but belicose when it comes to fighting for inmate justice, or representing minorities. We've been screaming about extremely serious issues in the prison system for years, alone and ignored by Salem's 'local daily' because we are not in lock step with the government, the way the Statesman Journal has been. It was so bad at one point that a large protest of this newspaper's reporting practices was held. (Demonstrators Protest Local Newspaper Over Racism) Today I feel differently about this organization, in fact I applaud them. Today, the team at this paper served the public at large. In fact the SJ also reported that the state has no plan to change its policies, and that these prisoners will die in silence in Oregon's publicly funded institutions. This is unheard of in the past, prisons were never traditionally allowed to legally conceal this information. The state of Oregon only intends to notify the public of, "certain high-profile or notorious inmates". According to the Columbus, Indiana, Republic:
Oregon's archaic, embarrassing laws that lock people up for smoking pot and consider sex between an 18-year old and a 17-year old '3rd Degree Rape', have naturally led to an explosive prison population, many times larger than what it ever was in the past, when moral fiber was still interwoven into the life patterns of officials. Oregon officials figured out a long time ago that prison is a lucrative business and that between bribery, extortion, prostitution and drug and cigarette dealing, hell cattle rustling, (true story) tons of money could be made and laundered to appear as legitimate. Then of course, you need a state literally packed with officials willing to ignore things like the Murder of Prison Director Michael Francke, a crime falsely hung on a patsy who never could or would have committed. The episode in Oregon's legal legacy is so far fetched, that it was featured in an episode of 'America's Most Wanted' after it was adjudicated. Today, a degree of hope found its way into the public consciousness, let's hope the SJ is on an upswing, and will continue to show more responsibility. __________________________________________________________________ Previous articles about Oregon's prisons:Jan-19-2012: Housing Inmates Who Make Death Threats... with their Intended Victims - Tim King Salem-News.com Dec-19-2011: Does Oregon's Government Simply Hate Black People? - Tim King Salem-News.com Jul-27-2011: DNA Evidence Should Free Oregon Inmate Terrence Kimble from Prison May-04-2011 Is There An Oregon Attorney Who Cares About Civil Rights?Tim King Salem-News.com May-31-2011: Snitch Sheets, Unresolved Murder and Severe Tobacco Crimes - Tim King Salem-News.com Mar-10-2011: Reader Commentary: Can Oregon Government Change its Spots? - Salem-News.com Mar-10-2011: Civil Rights Case in Salem Demonstrates the Power of a 911 Call - Tim King Salem-News.com Mar-09-2011: Civil Rights Under the Gavel of Justice - Tim King Salem-News.com Mar-08-2011: Oregon State Hospital and Staff Member Face Racism Charges Over Employee Termination - Tim King Salem-News.com Mar-04-2011: How Far will Oregon Legal Officials go to Prevent Due Process? - Tim King Salem-News.com Dec-27-2010: The 'Trickle Down' Effect of Whistleblower Retaliation - Tim King Salem-News.com Dec-01-2010: Oregon Political Prisoner Being Stripped of Phone Use - Tim King Salem-News.com Nov-25-2010: Tim King and Ruth Kovacs on KBOO's Prison Pipeline (AUDIO) - Salem-News.com Nov-22-2010: Tim King on KBOO FM's Prison Pipeline Tonight - Salem-News.com Nov-16-2010: Federal Mail Tampering at Oregon State Prison? - Tim King Salem-News.com Oct-29-2010: A Witness With No Credibility - Tim King Salem-News.com Oct-27-2010: Inmate's Life Threatened by Staff at SRCI - Tim King Salem-News.com Oct-21-2010: Oregon Inmate Stabbing Victim Attacked Second Time - Tim King Salem-News.com Sep-10-2010: Demonstrators Call Oregon State Hospital's Employment Practices Racist, Unacceptable - Tim King Salem-News.com Aug-28-2010: Observations on Michael Francke's Murder, Frank Gable's Conviction, & the paid Confession of 'Shorty' Harden - Salem-News.com Aug-25-2010: Whistleblower Blues: Man in the Hole - Tim King Salem-News.com Aug-11-2010: Demonstrators Protest Local Newspaper Over Racism - Tim King Salem-News.com Aug-05-2010: Evidence Shows Oregon Inmate Was Falsely Convicted - Tim King Salem-News.com Aug-03-2010: Chicken Night at the Oregon State Penitentiary - Tim King Salem-News.com Jul-21-2010: Eyes on the Oregon State Prison: Voicing Concern for an Inmate's Life - Tim King Salem-News.com Jul-14-2010: State Prison Whistleblower Says Oregon Corrections is Blocking Federal Mail - Tim King Salem-News.com Jul-05-2010: A Denial of Civil Rights- Oregon's Collaboration in Racism Whistleblower Retaliation - Tim King Salem-News.com Jun-26-2010: Getting Refamiliarized with the Murder of Michael Francke - Tim King Salem-News.com Jun-23-2010: Local Media Downplayed Former Prison Guard's Struggle Against Racism - Tim King Salem-News.com Jun-18-2010: Exposé: Skeletons Falling Out of the Closet of Oregon Corrections - Tim King Salem-News.com Jun-17-2010: Scott McAlister: Child Porn-Related Conviction and Practicing Law - Tim King Salem-News.com

Were these deaths identified as to how each person died? Don't you think that's important to families and for correcting the system?
Editor: We are working on it, the state DOC is not releasing the information but we understand there are other methods available for attaining this info, hopefully this summer we can make some progress.

Fact-Check time:
"Oregon's archaic, embarrassing laws that lock people up for smoking pot and consider sex between an 18-year old and a 17-year old '3rd Degree Rape'..."
Incorrect. In Oregon, Rape in the 3rd Degree applies to sexual intercourse subjected onto a person under the age of 16 years.
Is this embarrassing? Most states (and people) would consider that normal. Hence the Legislative-approved laws. Not that many people ARE incarcerated for Rape-3 (class-c felony, presumptive Probation).
Tim King: Here is embarrassing: a Salem teacher named Joe Bilera was having sex with his Middle School students for a long period of time, there were numerous victims and there was a range among these very young girls. He charmed his victims and gave them privileges and gifts and most were under a spell and had sex willingly. However one victim, the youngest, did not consent and was raped by this man forcefully. Now, after hearing 'consensual' and 'rape' over and over and over, the public missed the point that this bastard was a full blown rapist of little girls.
So you are implying what exactly, that the age of consent is 16? When adults engage in sex with minors they commit the act of 'Rape' and it goes third degree, second and first, depending on the age of the victim. If you disagree then fire back, I am aware of a law that "may" be applied when there is a two or three (I'm not sure) age spread, but if you want to imply again, that an 18-year old can have sex with a minor and not be charged with rape you again, are not correct.

Bravo. Tim, the po-dunk pigs that are allowed to perform their treasonous acts with immunity and impunity from their brethren need to be given a wake-up call. Until the "honest" cops speak up, they are all in the same boat. There will be a day of reckoning. Prison Pigs are among the lowest of the low scum when they deprive inmates of the very few rights they have. These pigs, by allowing misconduct behind prison and jail walls, destroy any hope for rehabilitation and add to the recidivism rates. Let it not be forgotten that around TEN PERCENT of those incarcerated are actually INNOCENT. Imagine if you are one of those innocent and you have to deal with the scum inside the prison who are controlled by the bad pigs are are given free reign because those who could otherwise be called good cops turn their head the other way...
Tim King: thanks!
