Bengal Under English Rule - an Analysis

WHEN Bengal was colonised by the East India Company in the second half of the 18th century, it was the richest jewel on the British crown.

(PHILADELPHIA BDNews) - A map of Bengal, Bahar, Oude & Allahabad - James Rennell - William Faden As a matter of fact, the inhabitants of Bengal had a much better standard of living compared to most Europeans living at the time.

(DAYTONA BEACH) - DeHavilland DHC-2 Beaver It was January, 1989. I was sitting at a table in Vancouver's Hot Jazz Society, nursing a pint of Finian's Red, listening to Jimmy Armstrong render "Si Tu Vois Ma Mere," while Gerry Green supplied the clarinet wall paper.

Peace in the Pentagon

Would you march against a war if it might ruin your own or a loved one's career? To stretch the definition of war-maker a little, would you take a job with Lockheed-Martin if you oppose war?

(WASHINGTON, DC) - Peace I'm a huge fan of peace studies as an academic discipline that should be spread into every corner of what we call, with sometimes unclear justification, our education system.

But often peace studies, like other disciplines, manages to study only those far from home, and to study them with a certain bias.

99 Years Ago: A Pause in the War on Christmas

It did not lessen our ardour or determination; but just put a little human punctuation mark in our lives of cold and humid hate.

(WASHINGTON, DC) - WWI Christmas truce Frank Richards recalled:

"On Christmas morning we stuck up a board with 'A Merry Christmas' on it. The enemy had stuck up a similar one. Platoons would sometimes go out for twenty-four hours' rest -- it was a day at least out of the trench and relieved the monotony a bit -- and my platoon had gone out in this way the night before, but a few of us stayed behind to see what would happen...

When It Comes To Questionable Washington Practices, President Has Reversed Himself

When it comes to transparency and credibility, the administration seems to be in increasing trouble.

(WASHINGTON, DC) - Barack Obama President Barack Obama won election, at least in part, by promising to change Washington.  He said repeatedly that he would stop the revolving door and not hire lobbyists in his administration.

At a 2007 campaign event in Nevada, for example, Mr. Obama declared: "I'm in this race to tell the lobbyists in Washington that their days of setting the agenda are over. They will not work in my White House."
