The SC commuted the death penalty of three assassins, Santhan, Murugan, the husband of Nalini and Perarivalan, to life imprisonment.

Nalini, Robert Pious, Jayakumar and Ravichandran were also released.

It was signed by the Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi and President Jayawardene of Sri Lanka in July 1987 to bring an end to the armed conflict in Sri Lanka between the Sri Lankan armed forces and the Tamil Tigers.
