Snow Showers Creating Slick Conditions on Portland Streets

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Portland, Oregon Today's surprise snowfall is creating hazardous driving conditions for Portland motorists all over the city, especially in the West Hills where the Portland Bureau of Transportation is responding to reports of slick streets.

Major arterials are in pretty good condition, with snow melting as vehicles drive over it. Neighborhood sidestreets that are not getting as much traffic are more slick.

Drivers need to be prepared for snow on Sexton and Siskiyou mountain passes in southern Oregon.

(SISKIYOU MOUNTAINS) - Snowy road Drivers moving between Oregon and California on Interstate 5 will have to be prepared for tough winter driving conditions. ODOT Assistant District Manager Shaun Stephens says chain restrictions are currently not in place but drivers should carry chains and come prepared.

Fatal Traffic Crash in Coos County Attributed to Icy Conditions

A California man died in the crash on Highway 42 east of Remote, in Coos County.

(COOS BAY) - Fatal crash in Coos County, Oregon 12-24-09 Oregon State Police troopers are continuing the investigation of a single-vehicle fatal traffic crash Thursday morning on Highway 42, about five miles east of Remote, in Coos County.

Sergeant John Keeler with OSP, says icy conditions were a contributing factor in the crash that resulted in the death of 48-year old Kenneth Michael Rasmussen of Bakersfield, California man.

McMinnville Man Clocked and Arrested for 100 MPH Reckless Driving

The suspect was arrested for Reckless Driving and transported to the Marion County Jail.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Photo from the Marion County Sheriff's Office shows 100 MPH speed recorded on the patrol car's radar unit, with the driver, Jebidiah Murphy, in the background. A deputy in Marion County says he observed a silver colored passenger car Monday traveling at an extremely high rate of speed, and turned on his radar.

He verified the speed of the vehicle at 100 miles per hour. Deputy Ryan Postlewait turned on his emergency lights and says he watched as the front end of the vehicle lowered toward the ground, which would indicate heavy braking.

Candle Caused Fatal Fire at Assisted Living Center

In the five-year period from 2004 through 2008, there were 584 candle-related fires in Oregon resulting in 14 civilian deaths, 71 civilian injuries, 22 firefighter injuries and estimated property losses of nearly $16 million.

(TUALATIN, Ore.) - Fire scene in Tualatin, Oregon After hours of meticulous investigation at the Park Place Assisted Living Center in Tigard, a Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue investigator has determined that yesterday's fatal fire was caused by a candle.

TVF&R Communications Officer Brian Barker, says the investigator spent most of yesterday processing the scene and interviewing witnesses.

Driver Strikes Three Children in Crosswalk

"Pedestrians are encouraged to wear reflective clothing and carry a light to help vehicles see them easier" -Sgt. Rob Ray, Washington County Sheriff's Office.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Vehicle that struck three children on Tualatin Valley Highway Ore. 12-20-09 Investigators say a car struck three children Sunday at 4:49 p.m. in the crosswalk at SW 178th Avenue on Tualatin Valley Highway.

The children were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to Sgt. Bob Ray with the Washington County Sheriff. They were hit by a 1998 Ford Taurus that was driven by 52-year-old Cecilio Venegas of Gresham, who told deputies that he never saw the children until his car hit them. Neither he nor his three passengers were injured.
