Acclaimed Author to Speak on Citizen Responsibility and Empowerment

(SALEM, Oregon) - Paul Loeb Author Paul Loeb will give a free public lecture on citizen responsibility Oct. 3rd at 7:30 PM in Cone Chapel at Willamette University.

Loeb will discuss how people can make their voices heard and their actions count in working for change. He will explain how to act on one’s deepest beliefs and make a difference despite obstacles.

Loeb has spent more than 30 years researching and writing about citizen responsibility and empowerment, asking what makes some people choose lives of social commitment while others abstain.

Corvallis Fall Festival This Weekend

The 34th annual Corvallis Fall Festival takes place this weekend in Central Park.

(CORVALLIS) - Laura Kemp performer and songwriter The Corvallis Fall Festival includes a major arts and crafts show, children's activities, 1K, 5K and 10K runs, music entertainment such as blues, West African drum and dance, folk, jazz, funk, and more.

Plus, Saturday night there will be a street dance from 6:00-10:00 PM. The group Stairway Denied will perform live music from the legendary rock band, Led Zeppelin.

The festival is free, and runs Saturday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Salem-Area Residents Invited to Health Care Planning Meeting

(SALEM) - The A meeting to discuss ways to improve Oregon’s broken health care system will be held Wednesday, September 27th, from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the First Congregational Church located at 700 Marion St. N.E.

Sponsored by the newly-forming Salem Chapter of the Archimedes Movement, the meeting is free and open to the public.

The community meeting is one of many being held across Oregon to encourage citizens to share insights and discuss possible next steps in formulating a new health care system that will ensure effective and affordable health care is available to everyone.

The “Supporting Peace and Alleviating Suffering in Darfur Act” aims to increase the prospects of implementing the peace agreement and, in the meantime, to address the unmet humanitarian and security needs in Darfur.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Violence in Sudan is on the rise In advance of the Global Day for Darfur on Sunday, Senators Gordon Smith (R-OR) and Edward Kennedy (D-MA) announced their bipartisan plan to implement the Darfur Peace Agreement and help alleviate the suffering in the region.

The bill is the first legislation introduced in Congress after the Government of Sudan signed the Darfur Peace Agreement on May 5th.

SOLV’s Great Oregon Fall Beach Cleanup is Saturday

Founded in 1969 by Oregon Governor Tom McCall to address litter and vandalism problems, SOLV's mission has expanded to reach every county in the state and to bring together government agencies, businesses and individuals in programs and projects to enhance the livability of Oregon.

(NEWPORT) - SOLV Beach Clean Up Saturday marks the date for the 23rd annual Great Oregon Fall Beach Cleanup.

The event will take place from 10:00 AM until 1:00 PM along the entire Oregon coast, from the Washington to the California borders.

Volunteers may check in at one of 40 meeting sites, pick up a litter bag, and head down to the beach to help improve the coast for wildlife and winter visitors.

Healing Field in Salem on the 5th anniversary of September 11, 2001

The families of the fallen soldiers from Oregon will be able to take home the flags representing their loved one who has lost their life to Operation Iraqi Freedom of Operation Enduring Freedom in Iraq and Afghanistan.

(SALEM) - Various flags from previous events Several area groups are sponsoring a four-day Healing Field event for Salem’s Riverfront Park that runs through September 11th, 2006.

Since 2002, scores of Healing Fields have been displayed at many cities across the Country. The Mid-Willamette Valley has been chosen as one of fifteen communities across the United States to be host to a Healing Field this year.

Annual Emergency Services Expo Saturday in Jefferson

This year's event is full of activities and displays for all ages with over 50 presenters and displays.

(JEFFERSON) - Several Jefferson Fire related The 12th Annual Emergency Services Expo will be held on Saturday, from 10:00 AM until 3:00 PM at the Jefferson High School grounds behind the stadium.

Activities include junior firefighter games, residential fire sprinkler demonstrations, "Safe Kids" games, fire safety house, as well as displays by the Forest Fire Lookout Association, Marion County Emergency Management, Fraud Awareness, and car seat safety.

Attendees can pose for a picture with Smokey Bear, Fire Pup as well as the Crash Dummies, Vince and Larry.
