First Prison Beekeeping Program Starts at Coffee Creek Correctional Facility

This new program will keep inmates buzzing with intrigue.

(WILSONVILLE, Ore.) - Prison beekeeping A group of honey bees arrived at Coffee Creek Correctional Facility late last month to take up residence in three hives that will be cared for by inmate workers as part of the first prison beekeeping program in Oregon.

The hives each contain one queen and up to 5,000 bees, which include drones and worker bees. Since all worker bees are female, it seems somehow appropriate that this brand new program should begin at Oregon's only women's prison.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - SPJ Awards Journalists from Oregon and Southwest Washington celebrated their hard work in 2013 at the annual SPJ Oregon/SW Washington awards banquet on May 17 at the Hotel Lucia.

Awards were presented in the SPJ Oregon/SW Washington non-daily contest as well as the SPJ Region 10 (Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Idaho, Montana) Excellence in Journalism contest.

Opinion: Parents Need to be Held Accountable for Bullying

Putting an end to bullying starts at home.

(CARSON, CA) - Bullying Carson, Calif., may become the first municipality in the nation to make bullying a crime, by treating it as an infraction or a misdemeanor.

The Carson city council voted 5-0 this week to move forward with the anti-bullying ordinance, with a final vote coming May 20.

Racial Humor Among Friends Deemed ``Harassment`` at Lewis & Clark College

(PORTLAND) - Lewis and Clark College Lewis & Clark College has declared two students, one African-American and one white, guilty of creating a “hostile and discriminatory environment” after racially themed jokes spoken between the friends at a private party were overheard and reported to campus authorities.

The students contacted the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) for help. In the face of media scrutiny and growing faculty concern, the college has said only that it “may” respond to FIRE’s criticisms.

Marijuana Policy Expert to Give McCall Lecture at OSU

The event begins at 7 p.m. in the Construction and Engineering Hall in the LaSells Stewart Center, 875 S.W. 26th St. The lecture is free and open to the public. It is presented by the OSU College of Liberal Arts and the School of Public Policy.

(CORVALLIS) - Mason Tvert Mason Tvert, communications director for the Marijuana Policy Project – and a leader of the campaign to legalize marijuana in Colorado – will deliver the annual Gov. Tom McCall Memorial Lecture at Oregon State University on Tuesday, May 13.

In his lecture, “The Road to Legal Marijuana in America,” Tvert will share insights on the past, present and future of marijuana policy in the United States.

Europe`s Largest Teachers` Union Endorses Israel Boycott Call

National Union of Teachers delegates heard a report from the delegation of Executive and non-Executive members who visited Palestine in October of last year, and "the strengthening of links between the National Union of Teachers and the General Union of Palestinian Teachers".

(LONDON) - Boycott Israel The largest teachers' union in Europe has passed a resolution backing a boycott of companies profiting from Israel's illegal settlements and occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

The National Union of Teachers which has more than 300,000 members in England and Wales, adopted the motion on Palestine (see Motion 31) at its recent annual conference. The vote was conducted by a show of hands, and passed by a clear majority.

(RIDGEFIELD, Wash.) - tattoo expo The Body Art Expo, the World’s Largest Tattoo Convention, took place last weekend at the Clark County Fairgrounds. The tattoo world came together for three days, and Oregon Body-Art Center from Salem was there.

It was the perfect place for those with some “killer ink” to show off to the folks who would appreciate it the most, and maybe get another tattoo, or a piercing, by some of the best in the business.
