Philippines: UN Working Around the Clock to Reach Thousands Affected by Typhoon

The UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) has indicated that up to 4 million children could be affected.

(MANILLA ) - An average of 20 typhoons a year strike the Philippines. Photo: IRIN/Jason Gutierrez United Nations agencies are working closely with the Government of the Philippines to reach those affected by the super typhoon Haiyan, as the number of reported casualties continues to rise and access remains a challenge in many areas.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he was extremely concerned by the impact of the typhoon, which has reportedly caused some 10,000 casualties, displaced more than 650,000 people and affected 9.5 million people.

America`s Bridges Are Falling Down, Falling Down...

According to a 2012 Skagit County Public Works Department, 42 of the county's 108 bridges are 50 years or older. The document says eight of the bridges are more than 70 years old and two are over 80.

Washington Bridge Packed With Cars Collapses Into River
