(CORVALLIS, OR) - An international team of scientists that installed a borehole temperature observatory following the 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake in Japan has been able to measure the “frictional heat” generated during the rupture of the fault – an amount the researchers say was smaller than expected, which means the fault is more slippery than previously thought.

It is the first time scientists have been able to use precise temperature measurements to calculate the friction dynamics of fault slip.

The anniversary will mark 29 years since the people of Bhopal, India were exposed to 40 tons of the highly toxic, methyl isocyanate (MIC) due to the negligence of the American-owned Union Carbide Corporation (UCC), which is now owned by the Dow Chemical Company.

Volcanic Eruption Sends Rocks Raining Down on Italy

Some rocks and ash can also fall from the sky much like rain, as they are sent into the atmosphere and can collect on clouds to be rained down with later precipitation.

(AccuWeather Global Weather Center) - AccuWeather.com reports Italy's Mt. Etna, the most active volcano in europe, erupted twice in less than a week earlier this month. The first eruption took place on Nov. 16, the second on Nov. 23.

Lava flows were reportedly shot 700-800 meters in the air. Lightning was also present during the explosion, as well as plumes of gas, smoke and ash.

Oregon Volunteers Spending Thanksgiving Caring for Victims of Typhoon

Medical Teams International is responding to the disaster by shipping medicines and medical supplies and sending teams of medical volunteers to provide care; the organization will continue to mobilize teams as needed.

(PORTLAND, OR) - Medical Teams International (MTI) is mobilizing additional medical professionals to care for those affected by Typhoon Haiyan.

By the end of this week, the humanitarian relief and development organization will have deployed more than 30 volunteers.

Nevadans Walking for Philippines Typhoon Victims

It is organized by GienieMae Camacho Oquendo, who heads the "Nevadans Helping Philippines Typhoon Victims", and backed by distinguished religious statesman Rajan Zed.

(MANILLA) - Typhoon Haiyan (locally named Yolanda) made landfall over the Philippines on November 8, 2013. The typhoon made six landfalls in five provinces – Samar, Leyte, Cebu, Iloilo and Palawan – causing storm surges and flooding affecting an estimated 36 provinces in all.

On November 12, the President of the Philippines declared a state of calamity. The death toll to date is reported at 2,500.

(ST. PETERSBURG Accuweather) - AccuWeather.com reports several Florida homes in a St. Petersburg-area neighborhood have been evacuated as a 40-foot-wide and 30-foot-deep sinkhole threatens the properties.

So far, a home's patio has already been swallowed by the hole. Neighbors were evacuated as a precaution.

Philippines: UN Humanitarian Chief Appeals for Support for Typhoon Survivors

(MANILLA) - The top United Nations humanitarian official today called for a sustained and collective response from the international community to help those affected by Typhoon Haiyan, and added that despite logistical challenges, aid is increasingly reaching those in need.

The typhoon slammed the country over the weekend and according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), some 11 million people have been affected, and more than 600,000 people have been displaced.

Tsunami-like walls of water 13 feet high barreled inland, wiping away everything in their path. Evacuation centers designed to resist high winds proved to be death traps as sea water rose. More than 10,000 are believed dead in just one town, Tacloban City.
