High Time to Accentuate Salem`s Art Smarts

As Rome was not built in one day, nobody expects Salem's arts potential to blossom overnight. But this very day is the ideal time to begin to plant those seeds.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Word has come down that the recent Salem Arts Fair held in Bush Park was a splendid success. Yes, it apparently drew many thousands of visitors and made some neat profits. But need we simply say "Hurrah" and rest on our laurels?

Any city worth its wait must necessarily nurture the arts. This is even more important for a state capitol that wants its public persona to extend beyond being an enclave for state government workers.

My Fear of Plagiarism

The mixed values of a safe and original set of words.

(CALGARY, Alberta) - As a writer I have a deathly fear of plagiarism. It begins immediately with my hyperawareness that every word in my sentences have been published elsewhere, by someone else.

Am I putting myself at risk by reusing them? I think individual words are probably okay. They are in the dictionary which, I hope, makes them public domain.

Lectures and Films Planned in Conjunction with Vietnam War Photo Exhibition

A rare opportunity for Oregonians.

(SALEM, Ore.) - The Hallie Ford Museum of Art at Willamette University has planned a variety of free lectures and films for September in conjunction with the exhibition Requiem: By the Photographers Who Died in Vietnam and Indochina, on display August 15 through November 8.

The exhibition features 160 photographs from the collection of the George Eastman House/International Museum of Photography and Film in Rochester, N.Y., taken by photographers who died in Vietnam between 1945 and 1975.

(Salem, Ore.) - Well, as near as I can figure this should mark three years of my doing comics for Salem-News.com.

That's a lot of time and a fair number of comics. When I thought about doing an online comic I knew I wanted it to be paced differently than print comics. Print media is limited in the space it can take up.

Maitland is Named Reed VP-General Manager

Ms. Maitland joined the Reed staff as Director of Marketing in August 2004.

(SALEM, Ore.) - This spring, historic downtown Salem will transform into a bubbling cauldron of bleeding edge independent music as dozens of bands converge at the 3rd Annual Cherry City Music Festival on April 9-11, 2009 to benefit at-risk youth, diabetes awareness and arts education.

Independent record labels Kill Rock Stars, K Records, Asthmatic Kitty Records, Tender Loving Empire Records and Boy Gorilla Records host some of their top artists to entertain, inform and schmooze in a celebration of do-it-yourself ethic.

Reed to Host Rouslin Art Benefit For Salem Chamber Orchestra

The event happens on the first Wednesday in March.

(SALEM, Ore.) - The Reed Opera House, in concert with the Salem Chamber Orchestra, will launch an exhibit of watercolors by Dr. Sam Rouslin at a wine reception on Wednesday, March 4, in the Reed’s second floor Gallery 205.

The “First Wednesday” wine reception honoring Dr. Rouslin from 5:30 to 8 p.m. is open to the public. All of the paintings in the exhibit have been gifted to the Salem Chamber Orchestra, and all proceeds from the sale of the Rouslin art will directly benefit the orchestra.

Local, International Films Highlight 6th Video Festival

A video festival in Salem that has grown steadily, this year goes international.

(SALEM, Ore.) - The 6th Mid-Valley Video Festival returns for two day of independent films, networking and parties, February 27 and 28 at Northern Lights Theatre Pub in Salem.

Several locally-produced full length features will also be shown. The debut from writer, director, and star Raymond Steers, "Sum of the Parts" blends action, science fiction, innovative editing and a montage of photos and computer effects to reveal a captivating and suspenseful thrill ride.
