Lockheed Fire in California Raging Out of Control

The last fire to burn this area was the Pine Mountain Fire in 1948.

(SANTA CRUZ) - Lockheed Fire AccuWeather.com meteorologists do not believe that lightning started the fire that broke in the Santa Cruz Mountains of central California Wednesday evening.

The rapid spread of the fire was aided by winds gusting to nearly 20 mph. The fire is burning in a heavily wooded, evergreen forest area well south of San Francisco, north of Bonny Doon in Santa Cruz County.

Summer in the City Music Features Musselwhite, 20 Bands

Organizers say 'Summer in the City' is a true family event.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem-News.com Legendary bluesman Charlie Musselwhite will headline the second annual Summer in the City Wine and Music Festival in Downtown Salem Saturday and Sunday. It happens August 15th and 16th.

Local favorites Curtis Salgado, Pepe and the Bottle Blondes, Terry Robb, the $100 Jayhawks, rock violinist Aaron Meyer and Big Monti Amundson are among the 20 musical groups that will perform.

Over a Million Evacuated as Typhoon Morakot Strikes East China

More than 300 houses have collapsed, and 16,200 hectares of farmland were inundated. The city's airport was closed and 56 roads were cut off by rainstorms.

(FUZHOU, China ) - Typhoon damage at Hongshan Village in Xiapu County, southeast China's Fujian Province Typhoon Morakot slammed into Chinese provinces on the eastern coast on Sunday, causing casualties, destroying houses and inundating farmlands.

Morakot made landfall in the coastal areas of Beibi Town, Xiapu County in Fujian Province, at 4:20 p.m., packing winds up to 118.8 kilometers per hour in its eye, the province's meteorological bureau said.

Western Lane District Raises Fire Precaution Levels

The district imposed fire safety rules on recreational activities in the forest on July 20th.

(EUGENE, Ore.) - Fire The ongoing heat wave has prompted the Oregon Department of Forestry's Western Lane District to raise the fire safety precaution levels across western Lane County and northern Douglas County.

Beginning July 30th, most timber harvest activity on the three-quarters of a million acres protected from wildfire by the district will be restricted to the period from 8:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Wildfire Precaution Levels Rise in NW Oregon

Wildfire season is here, officials ask Oregon residents to be careful.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Wildfire Triple-digit temperatures forecast for this week along with a chance of thunderstorms toward the weekend have prompted the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) to increase fire safety restrictions on industrial activity on northwestern private and non-federal public forestlands effective Tuesday morning.

Within ODF's Northwest Oregon Fire Protection District (includes the Astoria, Forest Grove and Tillamook districts), the Industrial Fire Precaution Levels (IFPL) will move up at 1:00 a.m. on Tuesday. The IFPLs regulate logging activity during the wildfire season.

New Riverfront Park Fountain Opens Independence Day With Ceremonial Tribute

The new feature is dedicated to the children of Salem, in memory of Asher Anderson.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem's Riverfront Park Salem's new interactive spray fountain in Riverfront Park will open to the public as part of the Salem's three-day July 4th Riverfront Park festivities. At 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 4th, the fountain will be dedicated to the children of Salem.

At the completion of the brief ceremony, the fountain will be turned on for all to use, says Nicole Wahlberg, Public Information Manager with Salem's Urban Development Department.

New Federal Report Makes Big Climate Change Predictions.

(PORTLAND, Ore ONS) - Salem-News.com Warnings for the Pacific Northwest are dire in a new federal report on climate change. In the works since 2007, "Global Climate Change Impacts in the United States" compiles years of data from more than a dozen federal agencies.

It says Oregon, Washington and Idaho will see hotter temperatures and less water in rivers for fish and wildlife, hydropower, agriculture, wildfire control...and drinking water for people.
