Striking Longshoremen Block Mile Long Train, Protesting Scab Labor

(LONGVIEW, Wash.) - ILWU International Vice President Ray Familathe Hundreds of ILWU members blocked a mile long Bulington Northern Santa Fe grain train from entering the new terminal at Longview, which transnational EGT wants to operate with scab labor.

On July 11, about 100 union members were arrested by Longview police for a similar action. This time, BNSF rerouted the train to Vancouver and suspended the delivery to EGT (which estimates it can save $1M with scabs).

False Maritime Distress Calls Affect USCG, Taxpayers, and Mariners in Distress

The Coast Guard must remain vigilant and take all distress calls seriously.

(SEATTLE) - Salem-News.com John W. Graham, 37, of Seattle, was indicted, Wednesday, by a federal grand jury for three counts of making false statements related to phony reports of a vessel in distress.

The U.S. Coast Guard says most distress calls at sea are legit; usually the callers are truly in distress. But some of those calls are suspected or found to be false distress calls or hoaxes.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Logging Today, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) announced the opening of a 30-day public comment period limited to a technical appendix to the Northern Spotted Owl Draft Revised Recovery Plan released last fall.

Forest landowners and mill owners expressed disappointment at the Service’s failure to release other aspects of the current draft plan and skepticism about the time allowed.

The government is currently upgrading its entire nuclear weapons research and production infrastructure; President Obama has promised $85 billion over 10 years.

(SEATTLE) - Photo of the six MLK nuclear resisters attached Six people were arraigned in Tacoma Federal Court on Wednesday morning for trespassing at the Bangor nuclear submarine base on January 15, Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The arrests at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor occurred on January 15, 2011 during a nonviolent resistance action at the Trident submarine base, which contains the largest concentration of operational nuclear weapons according to the Kansas City Star.

Japan Tsunami Rubble Will Reach West Coast

West Coast residents have, for many years, found on their shores lost or discarded items originating in the Far East.

(STATE COLLEGE, Pa.) - Japan Tsunami AccuWeather.com reports some of the rubble swept out to sea by the devastating Japanese tsunami of March 11 will ultimately cross the Pacific Ocean to the West Coast of the U.S., an oceanographer has stated.

Oceanographer Curt Ebbesmeyer has said that it would take about three years before West Coast residents begin to see trash stemming from the tsunami aftermath.

Nuclear Activists Receive Prison Sentence, Cheers, Prayers

(TACOMA) - Bill “Bix” Bichsel, S.J., of Tacoma, Washington; Susan Crane,  of Baltimore MD;  Lynne Greenwald,  of Bremerton Washington;  Steve Kelly, S.J.,  of Oakland , CA.; Anne Montgomery RSCJ,  of New York, New York,  were arrested on Naval Base Kitsap- Bango The Disarm Now Plowshares activists who entered U.S. Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor to symbolically disarm the nuclear weapons stored there were sentenced today at the Tacoma Federal Courthouse, receiving sentences of 6 months to 15 months confinement, plus one year supervised release.

About two hundred fifty people gathered at the courthouse to support the Plowshares activists with their presence, song, and prayer.
