Salem-News Reporter Heads to War Again

More details will be announced about this special assignment.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem-News.com Salem-News.com reporter Tim King will go to Baghdad, Iraq in March to cover the war and report specifically on the progress and mission of the Oregon National Guard.

Tim spent two months covering the war in Afghanistan over the winter of 2006/07, embedded with the Oregon Guard in the Army's 41st Brigade Combat Team. This time Tim will go to Iraq where hundreds of Oregon soldiers are stationed over the course of a year long deployment.

(KABUL, Afghanistan) - American troops celebrate Christmas in Afghanistan People in a war zone are limited in the ways they can celebrate holidays, but last year in Afghanistan they managed to keep the spirit alive in a number of ways.

I spent the last holiday season covering the war in Afghanistan where I was an embedded reporter with the Oregon National Guard's 41st Brigade Combat Team.

Two Ways to Cover the War in Afghanistan

Scott Kesterson says the Canadian government and military are satisfied with his work, but Canadian soldiers and their families allege that his approach may have been reckless.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Kesterson stands between Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski and Oregon General Douglas Pritt. Two Oregon television/Internet reporters were embedded with the Oregon National Guard's 41st Brigade Combat Team in Afghanistan. The soldiers have rotated home, but the YouTube video reports filed by Scott Kesterson continue to draw sharp criticism from Canadian soldiers and their families.

While Salem-News.com's Tim King spent two months in country covering many aspects of operations in the North part of the country, Kesterson spent most of his time actually covering the Canadian combat operations around Kandahar.

Tigard Parade Saturday Welcomes Oregon Soldiers Home From Afghanistan

The soldiers spent 16 months away from their families, and Salem-News.com spent two months 'in country' with these soldiers last winter.

(TIGARD, Ore.) - U.S. machine gunners in Afghanistan, Photo by: Tim King  Oregon residents can welcome their own state's troops home Saturday with a series of events planned in Tigard. Oregon's Governor Ted Kulongoski will be on hand as well as most of soldiers that number over 900.

The 41st Combat Brigade Team of the Oregon National Guard is returning from a 16 month deployment to Afghanistan.

Helicopters Thunder Across Afghanistan Territory (VIDEO)

The helcopters fly fast and low is because a fast moving target is difficult to hit when it is close to the ground.

(KABUL, Afghanistan) - helicopter ch-47 The thunderous blades of U.S. Army helicopters mean many things to soldiers at war.

Sometimes the sound means an infantryman is approaching battle, while other times the deafening roar is the sound of rescue and evacuation.

These helicopters making an approach in an Afghanistan mountain valley carry combat troops that are on the move. This CH-47 Chinook was also my ride back to the Afghanistan capitol, Kabul.
