Spirit Mountain Casino starts a $40-million construction project.

(GRAND RONDE) - When the Spirit Mountain Casino changed its bingo hall into "The Peak" area for gaming it also lost its space for entertainers and concerts.

Now the casino is building a $40-million dollar facility behind the casino.

The new building will include a convention center that can also double as a concert hall.

The History of Oregon`s Tallest Lighthouse; Yaquina Head

The Cape Foulweather Lighthouse is one of the most-visited on the west coast, with over 400,000 visitors each year.

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - It took approximately one year, and over 370,000 bricks from San Francisco, to construct Oregon's tallest lighthouse Yaquina Head, also known as Cape Foulweather Lighthouse.

The 93 foot tower, double walled for insulation and dampness protection, is Oregon's tallest, and is located on a narrow point of land jutting due west into the Pacific Ocean north of Newport, at Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area.

There was trouble with the lighthouse from the very beginning.

Like Yaquina Head, Cape Meares has been stalked by persistent rumors that it was built on the wrong site.

(TILLAMOOK) - The Cape Mears lighthouse at 34 feet is one of the shortest on the west coast.

The lighthouse is located is on a high rocky cliff placing the light 217 feet above the ocean.

On January 1st, 1890, Cape Meares was lit by Anthony Miller (the first principal keeper) and his two assistants.

Winter Whale Watch Now Underway Along The Oregon Coast

Gray whales are the predominant whales seen along the Oregon Coast.

(NEWPORT) - Winter Whale Watch Week has begun along the Oregon coast.


During winter Whale Watch Week, Dec. 26th through Jan. 1st, 2007, trained volunteers are available at 28 sites along the coast from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

18,000 whales will pass by in 4 weeks, mid-December to mid-January.

The main body is about 5 miles off shore, but many are seen 1 to 2 miles off shore.

The Salem Downtown Association and Salem Electric wanted to let the world know more about the confluence of history and art in Oregon’s capitol city, so they contracted Rebecca Maitland of Western Media and Tim King of Northwind Video Artists to produce a two and a half-minute video/DVD.

Heceta Head Lighthouse is Magic on The Oregon Coast

Heceta Head is said to be the most photographed lighthouse in the United States.

(FLORENCE) - It is pronounced “Ha – SEE – Ta” by most, “HECK – ah – Ta” by others, but everyone agrees Heceta Head is one of the most beautiful and magical lighthouses in the world.

The area is named for Captain Don Bruno de Hezeta (Heceta) of the Spanish Royal Navy, an explorer whose expedition passed along the Oregon coast around 1775.
