Business Leaders: Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is

(SILVERTON) - What happens when a community foundation and an ideological political magazine jointly convene and facilitate a group of 37 Oregon business owners and CEOs to discuss the Oregon economy?

The “Declaration for Oregon’s Future” that resulted from the Oregon Community Foundation and BrainstromNW magazine meetings claims in its preamble that Oregon cannot take advantage of existing resources nor new opportunities for global growth because “Oregon’s infrastructure is weak.”

As someone who values the important roles that public structures play in improving the economy and quality of life in Oregon, I was hopeful that the declaration would provide meaningful guidance on strengthening Oregon’s infrastructure.

Economic Growth Failing to Improve Incomes for Typical Households, Health Coverage, or Poverty

Crucial Votes in Fall May Make Matters Worse.

(SILVERTON) - homeless handicap person walking The typical Oregon household’s income remains stuck well below its level of a few years ago, despite a strong economy, according to new statistics released today by the U.S. Census Bureau and analyzed by the Oregon Center for Public Policy (OCPP), a Silverton public policy research institute.

The share of Oregonians going without health insurance for a year or more also remains high, and poverty has not improved.

“Oregon’s economy is doing great, but the prosperity is not being widely shared,” said Michael Leachman, policy analyst for the OCPP. “Oregonians should be proud of the economic growth they are producing, but they should also wonder why they aren’t seeing more of the benefits,” he added.

Another great experience for the “newbie” stargazer as she shares with you her excursion to the gathering hosted by Silver Creek Falls and Nightsky 45 Astronomy Club.

(SILVERTON) - galaxies from Hubble Saturday night, our family got together and caravanned from Salem to the “Star Party” at Silver Creek Falls’ Old Ranch site to experience what the summer’s night sky might reveal.

The youngest of the group, 7-year old Ciana, and 5-year old Moria, were excited at this new adventure. Amazingly, the adults were too. We were not disappointed.

The forum featuring Oregon's top law enforcement officer and an expert who recently completed 6 months training police in Iraq, it should offer valuable insight geared toward ending a huge worldwide problem.

(SILVERTON) - Silverton Chief Rick Lewis and Oregon AG Hardy Myers Silverton Chief of Police Rick Lewis and Attorney General Hardy Myers want Silverton area residents to know how to protect themselves and their families from the fastest growing crime in the world: Identity Theft.

The two law enforcement agencies will convene a free, public forum on Identity Theft on Wednesday, August 16th at 7:00 PM in the Silverton Council Chambers, 421 South Water, Silverton.

Jan Margosian, consumer information coordinator for the Oregon Department of Justice, will represent Attorney General Hardy Myers’ office, focusing on the many ways individuals, their families and small business can prevent being victims of identity theft.

(SILVERTON) - Images of Betty and her family The pain of losing a child never goes away. This case of ten-year-old Betty McCullough is a story passed on to family members since her disappearance in 1941.

Early morning, on June 21, 1941, little Betty woke up, slipped on a man’s shirt, put on her sister’s shoes, took a water bucket and quietly slipped by her two sleeping sisters. She was going to get water from the water pump outside. She was never seen again. No sign of her, no clues, nothing left behind.

Silverton Grad Named Miss Rodeo Oregon

(SILVERTON) - Jennifer Steffen Jennifer Steffen, Miss Rodeo Oregon 2007, has been named the proud representative of Professional Rodeo and the State of Oregon.

Jennifer was raised in Silverton, Oregon by her parents Randy and Laurie Steffen. She is a graduate of Silverton high school and is currently attending Concorde Career Institute's surgical technician program where she will graduate in January 2007.

Jennifer developed her love for rodeo while she was very young. While growing up, she attended the St Paul Rodeo each year as was family tradition and eventually led her to participating in both youth and high school rodeo.

Spoke Folk Arrives in Silverton

Trinity Lutheran Church will host the youth group's special program

(SILVERTON) - spoke folk A great group of young adult bikers aged 16-20, known as Spoke Folk, will be in Silverton on Tuesday, August 1st.

This spirited group will present an exciting, interactive, contemporary music program including music, drama, and puppets for all ages to enjoy.

The members of the Spoke Folk team represent many states and a few have come from a long way. During their 12-day tour, they will bike from their training site to six other communities in Oregon averaging 40 miles a day. Each evening while “on the road,” they share their musical program.

Pettit served as flight engineer and science officer aboard the International Space Station in 2003 for the three-man Expedition-6 crew that included American Ken Bowersox and Russian Nikolai Budarin.

(CORVALLIS) - NASA astronaut and Oregon State University alumnus Donald Pettit, who spent almost six months aboard the International Space Station after the space shuttle Columbia tragedy, will be the keynote speaker for da Vinci Days, an annual festival celebrating art, science and technology.

After the space shuttle Columbia disintegrated as it re-entered Earth’s atmosphere, scientists scrambled to bring Pettit and his crew safely back to Earth aboard the tiny Russian Soyuz spacecraft.

Pratum Elementary School Teacher Now Charged With 15 Counts of Sex Abuse

The arrest last year of Pratum Elementary teacher Matthew Gould left the small town east of Salem, in shock and disbelief.

(SALEM) - Matthew Gould The Marion County District Attorney`s office has filed ten additional counts of first degree sex abuse against a former Pratum Elementary School teacher.

44-year-old Matthew Gould faces 15 counts of first-degree sex abuse. He was arrested at the school on March 16th on five counts of first-degree sex abuse.
