Treasure Island`s Toxic Problem

Turns out that old Treasure Island Naval Station is some of the 'hottest' property in San Francisco...

(SAN FRANCISCO) - Toxic piles at Treasure Island School The Blue Angels jet fighters racing across the sky maybe 500 feet above me, were practicing for an air show so the Navy could show off what it considers the very best in personnel, training and equipment.

Their presence over the old Treasure Island Naval Station that day was ironic, because I was visiting the island to see the Navy at its most decrepit and toxic.

Scientist Declares Alien Signal Sent From Extrasolar Planet Gliese 581g

Professor Steven Vogt of the Carnegie Institution says 40 billion planets may have life or be developing life.

(CHICAGO) - Gliese system Ragbir Bhathal, an astrophysicist at the University of Western Sydney claims the light pulses he detected in December 2008 is from the region of space where the extrasolar planet Gliese 581g orbits a red dwarf star.

Recently, Gliese 581g was declared 100 percent certain to have life. Now the question has been raised, is it intelligent life?

Gut Microbes Promote Cell Turnover by a Well-Known Pathway

U of O biologists show good bacteria modulate an important signaling pathway where colorectal cancer takes root.

(EUGENE, Ore.) - Zebrafish Microbes matter -- perhaps more than anyone realizes -- in basic biological development and, maybe, they could be a target for reducing cancer.

Zebrafish were exposed under laboratory conditions to specific microbes to define how microbial signals interact with the Wnt pathway to promote cell proliferation in the gut.

The Planets: Finding Uranus

This is a particularly easy time to find Uranus because it is in a field where there are few other stars to cause confusion.

(CALGARY, Alberta) - Uranus Rings by David A Hardy The solar system has eight “official” planets although some still consider Pluto to be a planet. Looking only at the “official” list, from the Sun outwards, there is Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. All eight are readily visible to the naked eye or binoculars

Right now Mercury, Venus, Mars and Saturn are too close to the Sun to be visible. Venus is bright enough so that if you know where to look it can be spotted with the naked eye during the day.

NASA and NSF-Funded Research Finds First Potentially Habitable Exoplanet

(Washington, DC) - Artist rendition A team of planet hunters from the University of California (UC) Santa Cruz, and the Carnegie Institution of Washington has announced the discovery of a planet with three times the mass of Earth orbiting a nearby star at a distance that places it squarely in the middle of the star's "habitable zone."

This discovery was the result of more than a decade of observations using the W. M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii, one of the world's largest optical telescopes. The research, sponsored by NASA and the National Science Foundation, placed the planet in an area where liquid water could exist on the planet's surface. If confirmed, this would be the most Earth-like exoplanet yet discovered and the first strong case for a potentially habitable one.

Another Close Range Encounter with a Thunderbird Near South Greensburg, Pennsylvania?

There has been a long history of sightings of giant birds with oversized wingspans in Pennsylvania as well as other sections of the United States and elsewhere.

(GREENSBURG, Pa.) - Thunderbird On the evening of August 26, 2010, about 8:10 pm, there was a sighting of a monstrous bird in South Greensburg, PA. Just as it was getting dark, four people were sitting around in the yard having a barbecue and enjoying the beautiful weather when suddenly, their attention was drawn skyward by a sound like a “swish” or a “swoosh” or as one witness stated, “like air coming straight down.”

Several of the observers at almost the same time yelled out some exclamations including one man who said, “What the hell is that?” They were all startled to see a tremendously large bird that was flying over a tree in the yard about 30-40 feet overhead.
