Polk County Deputy Saved From Burning Car

The Deputy and the driver of the other vehicle were injured during the crash

(DALLAS, Ore. ) - Polk county deputy Deputy Shon Latty was responding to assist an Independence Police Officer who had called over the radio for help as the Officer was actively fighting with someone. While heading to the call, Deputy Latty was leaving the city of Dallas on Monmouth Cutofff Rd with his lights and siren going.

At about 12:07 p.m. Deputy Latty was approaching Godsey Rd when Deputy Latty's vehicle collided with another vehicle.

Salem Streetlight Fee Begins: New $2.80 Charge Coming on August Utility Bills

Fernandez said city officials are reluctant to ask residents to pay more (than $2.80/month) at this time.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem Oregon tax Salem residents will notice an increase in their city utility bills next month, but the rising cost has nothing to do with water or sewer service. Instead, it's the city's solution to pay for lighted streets.

Starting in August, the city's new streetlight fee will appear on water and sewer bills.

Walery`s Pizza Shows Local Support Fundraising for NWHS

Northwest Human Services helps with Medical, Dental, Mental Health care and social services for those in need.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Walery's Pizza There was a party going on in West Salem today, and it all had to do with the best pizza around. Hungry people always find their way to Walery's, but today was special. A portion of the proceeds at Walery's Pizza were donated to Northwest Human Services' Youth and Family program.

NWHS volunteers bused tables and delivered dessert to the very well-fed customers.

Two Wounded in Salem Drive-by Shooting

The second shooting in NE Salem in less than a week.

(SALEM, Ore.) - drive by shooting The Salem Police Department responded to a drive-by shooting shortly after midnight Sunday morning in the 4300 block of Kale St NE. A 14-year old boy and his father, 34-year old Arturo Chacon, were both wounded in the incident. Both were transported by medics to the Salem Hospital.

The boy was subsequently transported to a Portland trauma center with a chest wound, but is now expected to make a full recovery.

Distressed Swimmer Dies After Detroit Lake Rescue

Our deepest condolences to the young man's family, and friends.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Cody Ellingsworth Police say an 18-year old male was attempting to swim across the river with a group of friends. When the friends looked back they had lost sight of him, but quickly found him and helped pull him from the water. CPR was started immediately and he was eventually transported to an area hospital via Life Flight.

18-year old Cody Ellingsworth has been identified as the young man involved in yesterday's incident at Detroit Lake.

Salem Man Hospitalized After Shooting at Residence

(SALEM, Ore.) - Surfwoods shooting A shooting took place on a street near Silverton and Brown Roads early this morning. Detectives were called to the 3000 block of Surfwood Drive NE on the report of an adult male who had been shot. Once they arrived they found the male who was transported to the Salem Hospital with life threatening injuries.

Deputies are attempting to locate a person of interest in the shooting: Hispanic, male, adult, 5'07" to 5'08", with tattoos on both forearms. He was dressed in a white tee shirt, white shoes and long gray shorts that hung over the knee.

Charges Dropped Against South Salem High School Teacher

The Marion County District Attorney's Office decided to take no action "at this time".

(SALEM, Ore.) - SSHS Saxons Students and teachers are relieved this afternoon after charges were dropped against a South Salem High School science teacher.

The teacher, Sam Dufner, is a well known staff member at the school. Students were supposedly "burned" by a Tesla coil during class last week.
"Dufner's students used a Tesla coil during class last Thursday. Toward the end of one period, Dufner noted that it could also be used to mark the skin," said Lt. Birr.

Salem Police Volunteers to Patrol Downtown Parking Areas

Over 60 percent of theft cases involved cars that had been left unlocked.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem Police The Salem Police Department recently launched a new crime prevention effort aimed at reducing the number of vehicle break-ins and other property crimes occurring at downtown parking locations.

To help reduce the opportunities for vehicle break-ins to occur, teams of volunteers will be patrolling the various downtown parking locations to create a presence, and take the opportunity to speak with shoppers about the importance of never leaving valuables left in plain sight.

South Salem High School Science Teacher Arrested for Classroom Experiment

The arrest was as much a shock to students as to the teacher.

(SALEM, Ore.) - South Salem High School A teacher from South Salem High School was arrested at the school Tuesday afternoon.

Sam Dufner is a science teacher, he was arrested on two counts of first degree criminal mistreatment involving students, according to Lt. Steve Birr of Salem Police.

Fatal Longboard Accident Claims WSHS Senior

Counselors are on hand to help grieving students and staff.

(SALEM, Ore.) - fatal crash The police investigation determined that 18-year old Joshua Robertson was riding down Eagle Crest Road NW, traveling southbound. He lost control on a corner and fell backwards, striking his head. Joshua was not wearing a helmet or other protective equipment.

The West Salem HS Senior was transported to the Salem Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased around 2:10 p.m.
