Soviet Shuttle Spare Bar in Simferopol

The history of a Crimean airport that used to be the region's busiest.

(SIMFEROPOL, Ukraine) - Space shuttle image In January 2011 we will observe the 75th anniversary of Simferopol airport. Its history began 21 January 1936, when it was decided by the of Council of people commissars of Crimean Authonomy to create flying field to the north of Simpferopol.

Thus a place was chosen obviously not by chance - latitude sharply 450 N, longitude 340 E. The opening of the first airline route between Simferopol and Moscow took place in May, 1936.

Great American Heroes: Ho Chi Minh, Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden

Each worked closely with the US military, where's the appreciation?

(SALEM, Ore.) - Ho Chi Minh, Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden for America I'd wager that many people looked at the title to this story and assumed this is some tongue-in-cheek notion I came up with for shock value; after all those guys - being American heroes? You would be fair to think I've been out in the sun a little too long.

This might be my most offbeat tribute ever. 'Uncle Ho', Hussein and bin Laden; all men who ended up on America's most hated list before their time was through, but the title is true to form and is really unfortunate, and uncomfortable. Each was an ally for US missions and interests overseas.

Today you would probably call him a jack of all trades. Before 1933 came, he had already lost his first wife and a son. Left with 2 kids, he married my mother and had a big family.

Enigmatic 45th Parallel

Fascinating story about historic churches from our reporter in Salem, Oregon's sister city in the Ukraine.

(SIMFEROPOL, Ukraine) - Images of rock marking 45th parallel and the various churches in the Ukraine courtesy: Oleg Shorokov A Few months ago, a new sign was erected on the top of a mountain called Uzun-Syrt - the sign of the 45th parallel.

This line circles the earth, it also divides Crimea into two parts, across the Simferopol. It is interesting that the two sister cities of Simferopol – Kechkemet in Hungary and Salem, Oregon in the U.S., are also situated on the 45th parallel.

(SIMFEROPOL, Ukraine) - Dmitriy Ulyanov as a high school student 1893 It is known that Lenin was from a family with many children. His elder brother is known for having tried to kill the tsar and he was executed when he was young.

Lenin's younger brother – Dmitriy, is even less known. His fate was sealed in Simferopol.
