Depoe Bay Shark Confirmed as Great White (PHOTOS)

Under State and Federal law, it is unlawful to take or possess Great White Sharks.

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - Great White Depoe Bay Oregon State Police Fish & Wildlife Division is continuing the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the possession of what is confirmed as a 12-foot Great White Shark in the Depoe Bay area this weekend.

OSP Sergeant Todd Thompson says an OSP Fish & Wildlife Division trooper was working on the Depoe Bay docks August 8, 2009 at 8:00 p.m. when a shark was brought in by a recreational tuna boat.

Six injured in Head On Collision East of Newport (PHOTOS)

The crash investigation continues and police say criminal charges are being investigated.

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - Injury crash, Newport, Oregon 8-7-09 Police say six people were injured, one critically, in a head on traffic collision on Thursday, August 6th about 7:00 a.m.

Senior Trooper Carla Urbigkeit of the Newport Area Command, says a 1998 Ford passenger car was westbound on Highway 20 at about milepost 32 when it drifted onto the right shoulder and struck the guardrail. "It then veered into the oncoming lane where it struck an eastbound 2005 Pontiac van head on," Urbigkeit said.

Newport, Oregon Will be NOAA`s New Marine Operations Center in the Pacific

Verger Praises Selection of Oregon coast harbor town.

(COOS BAY, Ore.) - Vessel in the Bay at Newport, Oregon Senator Joanne Verger (D-District 5), representing the Oregon coast from Lincoln City to Coos Bay, praised the selection today of the Port of Newport as the newest home of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association’s Marine Operations Center in the Pacific.

“This is monumental news for our coast and for our state,” said Verger.

Fishing for Energy Comes to the Oregon Coast

Innovative program helps with the disposal and removal of old fishing gear and marine debris.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Marine debris being removed by an NOAA grant administered through the Oregon Sea Grant program. Fishing for Energy is catching on in Oregon. Garibaldi and Newport will be the first port communities in the state to participate in the innovative partnership that provides a cost-free solution for fishermen to dispose of old fishing gear that is then turned into energy.

The Fishing for Energy partnership will place collection bins at the ports to collect old, abandoned or lost fishing gear beginning in August.

Endangered Sharks Get Oregon Aquarium Spotlight (AUDIO)

The aquarium events run through August 8th.

(NEWPORT, Ore. ONS) - Oregon Coast Aquarium It is "Shark Week" at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport. Oregon waters are home to about 15 shark species. Five of them can be seen at the aquarium, where visitors can watch them feed and learn more about their role in the ocean ecosystem.

Scientists say that, like many other aquatic species, sharks have been over-fished, and some types are endangered. Aquarium spokesperson Cindy Hanson says one of the biggest threats to sharks is a practice known as "finning."

Two Die in Crash on Highway 101 South of Florence

Police aren't sure what caused an 18-year year old driver to lose control and cross into the oncoming lanes.

(FLORENCE, Ore.) - Fatal crash near Florence, Oregon 8-1-09 Police say two Florence-area residents died Friday afternoon on Highway 101 south of Florence when their small pickup lost control and was struck broadside. Two others received non-life threatening injuries in the crash that is still under investigation by Oregon State Police.

Two men in one vehicle were killed in the crash, police are not sure if they were wearing seat belts.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Spring Chinook in Oregon In June, Ocean Salmon Sport Seasons began up and down the Oregon Coast. Ocean coho angling continues to improve with anglers on the north and central coast averaging one to two fish each.

As the catch rate improves, anglers are reminded of the rules relating to the ocean sport salmon seasons.

Police Believe Driver May Have Fallen Asleep at the Wheel

The Michigan couple had to be extricated from the vehicle.

(COOS BAY, Ore.) - Crash near Green Acres, Oregon 7-11-09 A couple from Grand Rapids, Michigan was seriously injured Saturday afternoon while traveling in Oregon on Highway 101 south of Coos Bay when their vehicle collided with a tree.

Oregon State Police troopers believe the driver may have fallen asleep before crashing into the tree.

Helicopter Crashes in Grays Harbor: Both People Survive (VIDEO)

It was reported that the passenger survived the crash into the water without being injured. The pilot however, did reportedly suffer minor injuries.

(ASTORIA, Ore.) - Salem-News.com The Coast Guard says a privately owned helicopter crashed into the shallow waters of Grays Harbor, Washington sometime before 6:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 7th 2009.

It happened about a mile north of Ocean Shores, Washington. The people were located and recovered early in the morning.
