Akaka Proposal for Camp Lejeune Found Unacceptable by Veterans and Their Families

Shifting federal roles could impact the 'Caring for Camp Lejeune Veterans Act'.

(CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C.) - There are few people who know more about the Marine Corps' contamination problems at Camp Lejeune, N.C. than Jerry Ensminger. Jerry lost his daughter Janey to cancer, which he later learned was connected to the toxic water at the Marine base.

His concern now is an attempt to shift the heaviest responsibility and thus the control of providing Camp Lejeune victims their health care away from the Veterans Administration and place it on the Department of Defense.

Lejeune and El Toro: `A Tale of Two Bases`

Both Marine bases are EPA Superfunds sites. The govt. spent millions in remediation without disclosing the contaminants and health effects; there is no medical monitoring or health care for those injured, and hundreds of federal tort claims for Lejeune without going anywhere.

Lawsuit Filed Over Cancer-Causing Contamination at Camp Lejeune

The lawsuit alleges that the government knowingly exposed hundreds of thousands of Marines, sailors, their family members, and civilian employees to highly contaminated drinking water on the base at Camp Lejeune.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Former Marine wife Laura Jones' husband was stationed at Camp Lejeune; her legal team says the federal government knew that hundreds of thousands of Marines drank contaminated drinking water.

45-year-old Laura Jones who lives in Iowa, now has lymphoma.

FDA Takes Over Tobacco in the U.S.

The FDA says they will seek input from the public as they begin working to implement the Act.

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - On June 22, 2009, President Barack Obama signed the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, granting authority to the FDA to regulate tobacco products in the U.S.

In a news release, they state, "FDA looks forward to taking on this challenge and in doing so will partner with public health leaders at our sister agencies, at the state level, and in localities all around the country."

The FDA says the agency will perform its duties by using the best available science to guide the development and implementation of effective public health strategies to reduce the burden of illness and death caused by tobacco products.
