Freeing Native Americans from This Sick Culture

Oh, the lovely US government. It's overdrive now, breaking promises to each of us, but those it broke to Native Americans define the very culture we all must live in.

(SALEM) - Native American struggle Right now Native American kids are killing themselves. "Native youth are more than three times more likely to commit suicide (a number that increases to more than 10 times on some reservations), and have post traumatic stress symptoms on par with Iraq War veterans."

That's children, killing themselves. "Experts say in addition to these factors, a “trail of broken promises” adds to a feeling of hopelessness ...."

Every day, Lakota grandmothers are illegally denied their right to foster their own grandchildren. The South Dakota Dept. of Social Services rejects grandmothers for such trivial reasons as too few rooms in a home, too small of a home, too old, decades old crimes, and even rumors.

Peter Yarrow Concert to Benefit Native American Nonprofit

Peter Yarrow's “An Evening of Love and Laughter,” a concert benefiting Portland-based Wisdom of the Elders

(PORTLAND, OR) - Peter Yarrow, of the famed 1960s folk group Peter, Paul & Mary Peter Yarrow, of the famed 1960s folk group Peter, Paul & Mary, will perform “An Evening of Love and Laughter” to benefit Portland-based Wisdom of the Elders, a Native American nonprofit, 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14, at Augustana Lutheran Church, which donated use of its facility at 2710 NE 14th Ave.

Yarrow, who wrote some of the trio’s hits, including “Puff, the Magic Dragon” and “Day is Done,” has merged music and social activism in recent decades.
