(WASHINGTON DC Occupy Marines) - Kenneth Chamberlain, Sr., The niece stood in the darkened stairwell of the Winbrook Houses, listening, as 20 feet away five police officers yelled at her uncle, who had locked himself in his apartment.

It was 5:25 on a chill November morning. The officers banged loud and hard, demanding that her 68-year-old uncle open his door. “He was begging them to leave him alone,” she recalls.

Radiation Risk to El Toro Marine Veterans

Marines may have unknowingly been exposed to radiation in Hangar 296 at closed California base.

(IRVINE, CA) - Marine Corps danger The former Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) El Toro, California is an EPA Superfund, closed by the Marine Corps in 1999 and most of the former base sold at a public auction in 2005.

There may have been as many as 300 Marines and more unknowingly exposed to radiation from 1969 to 1999 in the Wing Supply Support Division attached to MWSG-37, MCAS El Toro.

Marine Hangar Was `Witches Brew`

MCAS El Toro’s Hangar 296 was “ground zero” for TCE plume spreading miles into Orange County and the only building on the former base contaminated with radiation.

(IRVINE, CA) - Hangars at MCAS El Toro Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) El Toro has been an EPA Superfund since 1990, primarily from the TCE plume from Hangars 296 and 297 spreading into the Orange County aquifer.

Both hangars were over 200,000 square feet in area, constructed in 1944, and used 55 gallons drums of trichloroethylene (TCE) to decrease aircraft for decades.

The redactions were requested by the Navy/Marine Corps and granted by Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry.

The Helmet from the Sudden Victims collection... you never see brains in a helmet in a John Wayne movie.

(GUIFORD, IN) - The Helmet had a green side or a brown side depending on terrain. The Helmet, a brief story from my collection Sudden Victims, is part of an unfinished novel, The Holey Grail, about my fictional character Maxwell Monk, his Vietnam War experience and PTSD.

I may never finish the novel. I work on it when I get the urge, but that part of my past is hard to deal with at times.

America does not support it troops unless they're standing in a recruiting line or appearing in a Hollywood movie.

(PHILADELPHIA, PA) - Robert O'Dowd served at MCAS El Toro in the 1960's The letter from the Philadelphia VA Regional Office was thick. It wasn’t a love letter.

The package was received on my daughter’s birthday, February 28, 2012. It contained the VA’s denial of my pending disability compensation claim. The denial runs a total of 66 single space pages.
