Dow Jones Soars Above 17,000 on Strong Jobs Report

The yield on 10-year Treasuries climbed three basis points to 2.66 percent.

(NEW YORK) - Dow Jones The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed above 17,000 for the first time as data showed employers added more workers than projected in June and the European Central Bank disclosed details of its stimulus plans.

The Dow gained 71.09 points, or 0.4 percent, to 17,047.33 at 10:20 a.m. in New York. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index rose 0.3 percent to a record 1,980.95.

Report: Salem Area Workers Earn Less Than The National Average

Among the higher paying jobs in the Salem area were health educators and mental health counselors.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Workers in Salem area get paid about 8 percent less an hour than the national average according to a report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Workers in the Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area had an average (mean) hourly wage of $20.44 in May 2013, while nationwide average was $22.33, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Regional Commissioner Richard J. Holden.

Report: Oregon Teens Having a Hard Time Finding Work

Younger workers are less common, even in businesses that traditionally employ a lot of young workers, such as hotels and restaurants.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Oregon added tens of thousands of new jobs while recovering from the Great Recession, but recent job growth completely overlooked younger workers. There were fewer workers ages 14 to 21 in 2012 than in 2010.

Why Don`t They Just Get a Job?

This brief observation was posted to a Canadian website. It applies equally and similarly to the United States.

(WATERLOO, Ontario) - Salem-News.com I really dislike that question. I’ve heard it in many ways, from many different people; some well-meaning, others, not so much. I know the question comes out of a lack of understanding, an understanding that even myself, someone who deeply cares about poverty issues, didn’t truly grasp until a few years back.

I grew up in a middle class family. My parents both have fantastic jobs and we never lacked anything we needed.
