Attacks on Anti-POSCO Activists Surges

Statement from representatives of various organizations on the violent attack on anti-POSCO protestors on 14th December 2011 and its aftermath.

(DELHI) - One person dies in December 14 clash between anti-Posco brigade and people engaged by a contractor for construction of a coastal road. We, the undersigned, visited Gobindpur, Dhinkia and Patna villages of Jagatsinhpur district of Orissa, on 22nd December, where the villagers are peacefully resisting the proposed POSCO steel plant for the last six years in order to protect their lands and livelihoods from complete destruction.

Our visit was in the aftermath of the incidents of 14th December 2011, during which the peaceful protest against the construction of the coastal road connecting Paradip port to the proposed site of the POSCO steel plant, was viciously and unexpectedly attacked...

(GENEVA) - Tamil refugees A day in a village on the beautiful coast of northern Sri Lanka: a lady combing the hair of a small girl crouching at her feet. She leans over and whispers something to her husband who is sitting beside her holding on to two other children.

The scene could easily be captured on a picture postcard but if one looks closer the reality is grimmer. Many of the surrounding houses have been reduced to rubble or are heavily damaged: a reminder of Sri Lanka’s bloody decade long civil war.

Jayalalithaa Jayaram, Chief Minister of the state of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, said such assaults on Indian citizens should be viewed as "an act of provocation and aggression against India."
