Moore Amendment Would Protect Historic Veterans Property From Being Privately Developed (VIDEO)

Currently, the Milwaukee Soldiers’ Home is on the National Park Service list to earn a place on the National Register of Historic Places.

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - Milwaukee Soldiers Home The United States House of Representatives today passed a Moore amendment that would protect historic veterans’ grounds in Milwaukee from potential commercial development.

Specifically, the amendment to the Military Construction and Veterans Appropriations Act for fiscal year 2010 would prohibit funds from being used to process new leases for commercial development on historic veterans’ property.

The Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring, awarded each year to individuals or organizations, recognizes the crucial role that mentoring plays in the academic and personal development of students studying science or engineering and who belong to minorities that are underrepresented in those fields.

Radio Free Asia Named Broadcaster of the Year at 2009 New York Festivals

RFA Reporters, Services Take Record 7 Awards.

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - Libby Liu, President of Radio Free Asia Today, Radio Free Asia was named Broadcaster of the Year by the New York Festivals for winning the largest number of awards among participating broadcasters. Four of Radio Free Asia’s nine language services won top honors for excellence in journalism in the international competition, which included three gold, one silver and three bronze medals.

“While Radio Free Asia has consistently been honored at the New York Festivals over the years, it is deeply gratifying that the outstanding work by our staff won a record number of awards this year,” said Libby Liu, President of Radio Free Asia.

Oregon Guard Prepares for Iraq Deployment (VIDEO)

(FORT STEWART Ga.) - Oregon soldiers of the 41st BCT prepare for duty in Iraq Oregon National Guard soldiers with the 41st Infantry Brigade Combat Team were honored during a special sendoff ceremony Friday in Fort Stewart Georgia.
The roughly 3,500 41st IBCT Oregon soldiers are preparing to spend about a year in Iraq, where the U.S. presence is quickly drawing back after the recent July 1st deadline to vacate Iraq's major cities.

President Obama Signs Bill Awarding Congressional Gold Medal to Women Airforce Service Pilots (PHOTOS)

First women to fly American military aircraft served courageously, blazed trails during WWII.

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - President Obama today signed into law S. 614, a bill to award a Congressional Gold Medal to the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP). WASP was established during World War II with the primary mission of flying non-combat military missions in the United States thus freeing their male counterparts for combat missions.

Its pilots were the first women ever to fly American military aircraft and flew almost every type of aircraft operated by the United States Army Air Force during World War II on a wide range of missions.

Medal of Valor Presented to Attempted Abduction Survivor

The Department will present a second individual with a medal of Valor for his courageous actions in helping ward off the attacker.

(CORVALLIS, Ore.) - (from left to right):  Officer Christine Peterson (uniform), Officer Brian Stahl (shirt and tie), Jessica Taylor-Weiss (with framed certificate and medal), Detective Shawn Houck (uniform), and Sergeant Mike Mann (plain clothes) Corvallis Police Department presented Jessica Taylor-Weiss with the Corvallis Police Department Medal of Valor for her courageous actions on October 7, 2006 as she successfully fought off an attempted abduction and sexual assault in the 500 block of NW 23rd Street.

The Corvallis Police Department will conduct an award ceremony at 4:00 PM on June 17, 2009 in the Corvallis Library to recognize Department members for a number of meritorious achievements, including members involved in successfully investigating this attack.

(SPRINGFIELD, Ore.) - 2009 OS Trooper of the Year A Springfield-area Oregon State Police (OSP) Fish & Wildlife Division trooper known for having "an outstanding ability to place himself in the right place at the right time" received the division's 2008 "Fish & Wildlife Division Officer of the Year" award.

Trooper Marc Boyd, age 44, was presented the award by Captain Walt Markee, OSP Fish & Wildlife Division director, and Sergeant Tom Hulett during a presentation at the OSP Springfield Area Command office.

2009 Presidential Scholars Announced

Oregon scholars hail from Corvallis, Portland and West Linn.

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - Graduate cap and tassle U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan today announced the selection of 141 outstanding high school seniors as the 2009 Presidential Scholars. The students have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, artistic excellence, leadership, citizenship, and community service.

Presidential scholars will be honored for their accomplishments in Washington D.C., tentatively scheduled from June 20-24.
