Salem-Area Food Share Warehouse Nearly Empty

In each of the last three months, an average of 5,257 families had to rely on a food box to avoid hunger.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Salem-News.com Food reserves in the Marion-Polk Food Share warehouse in Salem are at dangerously low levels.

That’s significant, since Food Share supplies the majority of the emergency food supply for each of 73 member charities/programs that work cooperatively to aid the hungry in the two-county region.

“If food stopped coming in today, our warehouse would be empty in five days,” said Executive Director Ron Hays.

Food Share’s most recent service numbers reveal that 44% of those eating from food boxes in the Salem-Keizer area are children.

Rally at the State Capitol on May 14th Supports Local Services for Homeless and Runaway Youth

The rally will be held at 11:30 at the Capitol steps.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Oregon state capitol by Kevin Hays A rally for homeless youth will be held May 14th at the state capitol in Salem. Organizers say the rally represents the momentum of a movement in Oregon to recognize and meet the needs of runaway and homeless youth.

Jean Lasater with the Oregon Homeless and Runaway Youth Coalition, says that every year, thousands of older children and youth find themselves doubled up with friends, in shelters and on the streets.

First Estimate of Homeless Population in a America in More Than a Decade Released

Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Washington were the states with the highest ratio of homeless people per capita.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - A once homeless child in Salem There were 744,313 people homeless in January 2005 according to Homelessness Counts, the first national assessment of the number of homeless people in over a decade.

The report was released Friday by the Homelessness Research Institute of the National Alliance to End Homelessness.

The data included in the study represent a point in time; therefore the estimate only presents a snapshot of the homelessness problem in the Unites States.

Fifty-six percent of homeless people counted were living in shelters and transitional housing and, shockingly, 44 percent were unsheltered.

Willamette Valley Homeless Seeking Shelter From The Cold; Agencies Desperately Need Donations

The cold snap could prove deadly for the homeless, especially children and the elderly

(SALEM) - homeless With frigid temperatures expected in the Salem area over the next few days, the number of homeless trying to find a warm place to eat and sleep has put those who are trying to help in a desperate need of donations of food and warm clothing.

The National Weather Service says overnight low temps will be in the teen's to low 20's through Tuesday.

Empty Bowls Fundraiser Hopes to Help Hungry in Salem

So far this year, 4.4 millions pounds of food has been distributed to hungry families through a network of 70 member charities.

(SALEM) - Bowls come in all shapes, sizes and colors -- especially at “Empty Bowls,” the fifth annual fundraiser for Marion-Polk Food Share, hosted by the State Street Merchants in downtown Salem.

On Salem’s First Wednesday, December 6th, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at US Bank, Ladd & Bush Branch, 302 State Street, nearly 300 handmade bowls will be ready to sell.

With each purchase, a free simple meal of soup and bread will be served by Wild Pear Restaurant and Cascade Banking Company.

Rain, Snow, Frigid Temperatures Taking a Toll on Salem-Area Homeless, Resources

Area homeless shelters are in desperate need of blankets, coats, socks, and food supplies.

(SALEM) - photo: homeless person The recent rain, snow and fridged temperatures that have hit the Salem-area over the last few weeks, has taken a toll on area homeless and those who are trying to help them find a better life.

Officials at the Union Gospel Mission’s men’s shelter, located at 345 Commercial St. NE in downtown Salem, say they have been seeing a steady increase in the number of homeless men seeking shelter from the cold, wet weather.

That is the same for the women’s shelter at 5119 River Road N. in Keizer.

Homeless Families Saved by Salem’s Interfaith Hospitality Network

Since May 1999, a safe respite for homeless families needing shelter, food, transportation, and much needed emotional support has been tucked away on the quiet Edgewater Street in West Salem.

(SALEM) - Tucked away off Edgewater Street in west Salem is a nondescript two-story house with a nice shade tree in the front yard. The backyard has easily accessible parking spaces. It is unpretentious. The sign in the front yard gives a clue as to what is inside but it is usually ignored by those passing by.

The city most efficient at creating homeless people now says they will arrest you if you feed them.

(SALEM) - Homeless in America The city council of Las Vegas, Nevada took down the town's typical facade this week when they voted to make it illegal to feed homeless people in a park. No glitz, no neon, just the real heart of America's cruelest city laid open like a book.

Now I readily admit that I am no fan of Las Vegas, having survived five years in TV news there between '96 and '01 working for both the NBC affiliate and the FOX station. I think I could say that for the most part, I saw it all.
