Salem Fire Says be Safe this Year With Fireworks

(SALEM) - fireworks display It that time of year again, the fireworks season is just around the corner. Starting June 23rd and running thru July 6th fireworks are approved for sale in Oregon. There are 41 sales locations within the City of Salem. They can be found
at both inside and outside locations.

The Salem Fire Department hopes that you will enjoy the fun and excitement of your fireworks, and that you will do so in
a safe and careful manner.

Each year the Salem Fire Departments responds to a number of fireworks related incidents during this time period.

Celebrate an Old-Fashioned 4th of July in Newport

Events include a clambake and seafood barbecue and fireworks over Yaquina Bay.

(NEWPORT) - Newport Clambake circa 1900. The City of Newport invites visitors to recapture the fun of a family-friendly, old-fashioned 4th of July with a small-town flavor.

This coastal community will celebrate the holiday weekend in traditional style, beginning with a clambake and seafood barbecue at historic Nye Beach on Saturday, July 1st from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM The annual fireworks display will take place over Yaquina Bay at dusk on Tuesday, July 4th.

From the late 1800s through 1918, Newport residents celebrated the 4th of July with a clambake at Nye Beach and four years ago the tradition was revived. "We wanted to bring back the clambake not only to celebrate Independence Day, but to create a means to help our local non-profit organizations and schools raise needed funds," said organizer Berniece Hammon.

Governor Calls For Flags to be Flown at Half Staff Until Noon on Memorial Day

Governor to give remarks at Willamette National Cemetery Memorial Day Ceremony.

(SALEM) - flag Governor Kulongoski has asked that all state flags at public institutions be flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon on Monday, in memory of those who made the supreme sacrifice for their country in the line of duty.

`Memorial Day is a time to reflect on the many sacrifices countless men and women have made throughout our nation`s history to preserve our democracy and America`s cherished values`, Kulongoski said.

`Again, as we commemorate Memorial Day, we do so with special significance as many of Oregon`s finest citizens are still serving in Iraq, Afghanistan and in other important military assignments around the world.`

The Governor will offer remarks on Monday at the Willamette National Cemetery - Memorial Day Ceremony.

(SALEM) - Rescue at Lincoln Beach If you are heading out on the water this Memorial Day weekend, the Oregon State Marine Board has some tips to keep you and your family Safe & Sound while out on the water. It may be information we have all heard before, but death by drowning happens only once in a lifetime.

It was only recently on the Oregon coast, three lives were lost that could have been saved if the boaters were wearing life jackets. Accidents happen but they don't have to be fatal accidents. One thing is certain -life jackets save lives.

Here's another reason why it's important to wear a life jacket; all waterways are cold this time of year in Oregon. In fact most Oregon waterways are cold year-round.

All Oregon Parks Reserved Camp Sites Gone For Memorial Day Weekend

(SALEM) - boat launch The dash to reserve a state park campsite for Memorial Day weekend is over.

According to Reservations Northwest, the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department's campsite reservations center, all sites at the 28 parks that accept reservations are booked for the three-day period.

However, 22 other state parks have sites available on first-come, first-served terms in every area of Oregon.

"Some pretty good options still exist out there," said OPRD Recreation Programs Manager Richard Walkoski.

AAA Projects Slight Increase In Memorial Day Travel Despite High Fuel Costs

In Oregon, regular gasoline currently averages $3.08, 39-cents higher than a month ago and 65-cents higher than a year ago.

(PORTLAND) - highway Travel will be up slightly this Memorial Day holiday despite high gas prices and increasing vacation costs, according to AAA. AAA estimates that 37.6 million

Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home this holiday, a 0.9 percent increase from last year.

Ever think about how cool it would be to take a tour of the historic Reed Opera House with a roving bagpipe player?

(SALEM) - bagpiper in Salem Oregon St. Patrick's Day was celebrated by hearty revelers in Downtown Salem, and Salem-News.com's Tim King caught up with a roving bagpipe player who toured the Reed Opera House entertaining everyone along the way.

And yes, by the way, they do play the bagpipes in Ireland!
