On the face of it, more than six years after his first election, his prospects are still remarkably rosy. The economy clips along at about 7% a year. Mr Rajapaksa’s coalition controls over two-thirds of parliament, and opposition parties are so weak that a senior minister chuckles about not being held to account.

War Crimes in Sri Lanka

THERE are signs that the international community is gearing up for action to hold Sri Lanka accountable for alleged war crimes committed by its forces at the end of the brutal civil war against the Tamil Tiger rebels in 2009.

(LONDON) - Effigy of Sri Lankan president Rajapaksa A preliminary investigation by the United Nations said Sri Lanka’s “conduct of the war represented a grave assault on the entire regime of international law” concluding that up to 40,000 Tamil civilians may have been killed in just five months.

There are indications that the death toll could be even higher.

Misguided Buddhist Zealots

Who is responsible for this blatant disregard for Tamil culture?

(NEW DELHI ) - Keeramalai Since the end of the conflict in 2009, a new phenomena has emerged. That of Buddha statues being erected along the A9 route that leads to Jaffna.

Over 28 Buddha statues have been counted along this route since the war concluded in May 2009. The comedy of this charade (what else can one call it?) is that these statues are placed in areas where little or no Buddhists reside.

The UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) carries out mine risk awareness programmes in the north and east.

(COLOMBO) - About 126 sqkm of land remains to be cleared Landmine clearance in Sri Lanka's conflict-affected north could take more than a decade, experts say.

"It is expected to take [in] excess of 10 years to fully mitigate all remaining contamination in Sri Lanka," the Mine Action Project of the UN Development Programme (UNDP) in Sri Lanka told IRIN, citing a lack of resources coupled with the difficult nature of the work.

Due to fear of retribution and the operation of the Terrorism Act, the relatives of the victims are fearing to file Habeas Corpus applications to the Supreme Court.

(COLOMBO) - V Balakumar and Yogaratnam Yogi Two senior men with the LTTE, V Balakumar and Yogaratnam Yogi, are reportedly are held in detention with other senior men of the LTTE south of Sri Lanka, under strict military supervision.

This news rings contrary to the government's claim of that both were dead in the battle front.
