Birds, Bees and Biodiversity: How Food Choices Impact the Planet

Clark College biology professor Kathleen Perillo will lead the discussion during the college's spring 2008 Faculty Speaker Series event on April 25TH.

(VANCOUVER, Wash.) - Kathleen Perillo of Clark College Clark College will host the second event in its new Faculty Speaker Series n April 25th with a discussion by acclaimed ecologist and biology professor Kathleen Perillo.

In "Birds, Bees and Biodiversity," Perillo will discuss how food choices impact the planet as she shares her sabbatical journey through Switzerland, France and Mexico exploring sustainability issues and their relationship to the United States.

UN Warns That Surge in Food Prices Could Lead to Increased Unrest

"What we see in Haiti is what we’re seeing in many of our operations around the world – rising prices that mean less food for the hungry. A new face of hunger is emerging: even where food is available on the shelves, there are now more and more people who simply cannot afford it," said WFP Executive Director Josette Sheeran.

Dreyer`s Issues Voluntary Recall of Two Ice Cream Flavors

Less than 90 mislabeled cartons are believed to be in the marketplace. These products are sold in various retail grocery stores.

(OAKLAND, Calif.) - Salem-News.com Consumer Report Dreyer's Grand Ice Cream is voluntarily recalling 90 cartons of Dreyer's Slow Churned(R) Light Caramel Delight ice cream and Slow Churned Light Butter Pecan ice cream distributed in Colorado, Idaho, Oregon and Wyoming, because the ice cream may contain pecans not identified on the label.

The potentially affected cartons are the 1.75-quart size of Dreyer's Slow Churned Light Caramel Delight and Slow Churned Light Butter Pecan ice cream. The sides of the Slow Churned Light cartons identify the flavor as Caramel Delight, but the carton lids identify it as Butter Pecan.

2008 State High School Culinary Championships Scheduled For Feb 23rd

Stakes are high; the first-place winning teams will be flown, all expenses paid, to San Diego to represent Oregon at the National ProStart Student Invitational in April.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - On Saturday, February 23rd 2008, several hundred high school student chefs will converge in the Oregon Convention Center in Portland to compete in the state high school culinary championships.

Thousands of people will be on hand to watch as teams from 33 state high schools from all across Oregon pour their heart and soul into creating culinary delights that will "wow" judges, and impress industry leaders with their know-how in management concepts.

United Food Group Expands Voluntary Recall to Include an Additional 370,000 Pounds of Ground Beef Due to Possible E. coli

The 11 affected states are Oregon, California, Washington, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming and Montana.

(VERNON, Calif. ) - Ground beef United Food is expanding a recall to include an additional 370,000 pounds of ground beef that may have been contaminated with the E. coli O157:H7 bacteria.

This is the first product recall in the United Food Group's 30-year history, and because the company's policy is to err on the side of caution in its effort to protect public safety, it is voluntarily expanding its original June 3rd recall based on concerns raised by the California Department of Health Services.
