Experts Say Winds and Dry Conditions Fuel Fire Conditions

Wildland fire agencies are not at full strength in the fall, since some of the seasonal firefighters have returned to their regular jobs or college classes. A larger fire this time of year would stretch resources thin.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Fire experts say easterly winds could elevate the risk of wildfire in northwestern Oregon forests this weekend. Foresters caution hunters and other outdoor recreationists heading afield to be mindful of activities that could start a wildfire.

"The forecast is for gusty winds," Oregon Department of Forestry's Neal Laugle said.

(GERVAIS, Ore.) - A late evening fire Monday left a family of 7 without a home. Paul Iverson, Fire Marshal with the Woodburn Fire District, says fire crews were dispatched to a report of an attached carport on fire at 9:30 p.m. Monday evening.

A Lifeflight helicopter was used to transport the single male patient from the area to Emanuel Hospital in Portland.

(SCAPPOOSE, Ore.) - A pilot received injuries today when his single-seat, light aircraft crashed northwest of Saint Helens, Oregon, approximately 5 miles northwest of the Scappoose Airport.

The Columbia County Sheriff's Office dispatched its Search and Rescue Unit and requested assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard for help in locating the aircraft after they were contacted by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Beaverton Apartment Fire Displaces Nine

Though firefighters were able to extinguish the fire within 15 minutes of arrival, the unit involved was completely destroyed and three adjacent units were damaged by smoke and water.

(BEAVERTON, Ore.) - Firefighters responded to reports of a fully-involved apartment fire just after 1:00 a.m. this morning, in the Hunt's Court complex in Beaverton on SW Farmington Road.

Cassandra Ulven with Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue, says the incident commander, who arrived seconds before the first fire crews, feared the worst when he saw a wall of flames coming from the single-story complex.

The victim has not been identified. A Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue investigator is working to determine the cause of the fire.

(BEAVERTON, Ore.) - Firefighters from Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue aggressively attacked a mobile home fire in Beaverton that was threatening to spread to surrounding structures early this morning. Although firefighters were able to knock the fire down quickly, firefighters discovered one person inside the home who was deceased.

Firefighters were called to the Mobile Home Corral at 3737 SW 117th Avenue in Beaverton at 3:45 this morning. The first arriving engine found a mobile home fully involved in flames.

Wildfire Smoke Impacts Southern and Central Oregon

Smoke from Southern Oregon Wildfires Prompting Air Quality Concern.

(BEND, Ore.) - Concern about smoke and haze in low-lying areas of Central and Eastern Oregon, including Crater Lake, Bend, Redmond, Burns, Klamath and surrounding communities, is prompting the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality to alert residents to the possible associated dangers.

Residents can take protective measures to mitigate breathing problems or other symptoms from smoke.

Fire Still Threatens Oregon`s Forests

(SALEM, Ore.) - There's no better time of year than right now to enjoy northwestern Oregon's forests. But the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) reminds residents planning hunting or camping outings to be extra aware of fire danger as they head into the forest.

"Even though the weather has begun to cool, forest vegetation - from grasses, to shrubs, to trees – remains dry and susceptible to wildfire," said ODF forester Ashley Lertora.

Siskiyou Fire Declared a Conflagration: State Deploys Resources

A Red Cross evacuation center has been set up at the Ashland Armory.

(ASHLAND, Ore.) - Oregon Governor Theodore Kulongoski has declared the Siskiyou fire burning just outside of Ashland a conflagration. The declaration authorizes the state fire marshal to mobilize firefighters and equipment to assist local resources battling the fire. The fire is approximately 100 acres and 50 to 100 homes have been evacuated.

The Office of State Marshal's Red Incident Management Team and structural task forces from Coos, Benton, and Linn counties and strike teams from Deschutes, Marion, and Lane counties are en-route to assist in protecting threatened structures.
