Salem Concert Band Presents In the Steps of Sousa

Organizers say the listener may be surprised by the array of emotions and images that Sousa creates with this piece, ranging from joy and celebration to a quiet leitmotif representing the character Nydia to the fear and chaos of Pompeii’s infamous volcanic demise in 79 AD.

(SALEM) - Salem Concert Band The Salem Concert Band will return to the Historic Elsinore Theatre stage on Sunday, May 6th, at 3:00 PM, with conductor Keith Weathers’ annual “In the Steps of Sousa” program.

The program features several works composed by John Philip Sousa, including Nobles of the Mystic Shrine March and Hands Across the Sea March. Composed in 1893, just one year after his first performance with the Sousa Band in 1892, Sousa’s The Last Days of Pompeii is a programmatic suite in three movements, “In the House of Burbo and Stratonice,” “Nydia,” and “The Destruction.”

Food for Fines Week Coming to Salem Public Library

Food items will be accepted at the Central Library, West Salem Branch, and on the Bookmobile.

(SALEM) - Salem Public Library For one week only, Salem Public Library will forgive fines for patrons who bring in donations of non-perishable food items between Sunday, March 25th and Saturday, March 31st.

This highly successful program pays off for library patrons and for families served by Marion-Polk Food Share.

The 2006 Food for Fines program generated 6,100 pounds in donations. Fines totaling $3,993 were cleared on 576 library cards.

NASA Astronauts to Speak at OMSI March 28th

Ever wonder what it's like in outer space? Or how hard it is to train to become an astronaut? And just how does a person eat in zero gravity?

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Astronauts in space The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry welcomes astronauts Mark L. Polansky and Robert L. Curbeam, Jr. to a special speaking engagement in OMSI's auditorium Wednesday, March 28th at 10:00 AM.

With a combined total of 1,829 hours in space, Astronauts Polansky and Curbeam =will discuss their space travel experiences and answer questions from the audience.

"We are pleased that the Rotary Club of Portland is bringing astronauts Polansky and Curbeam to OMSI and to Portland," said Mindy Clark, OMSI Senior Vice President for Organizational Advancement.

Oregon Celebrates Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

The Awards ceremony and dedication takes place Monday, March 12th, from 3:00 to 4:00 PM at the Barbara Roberts Human Services Building, 500 Summer St. NE in Salem.

(SALEM) - Salem-News.com Oregon's governor has proclaimed March 2007 Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. In recognition of the designation, the Oregon Council on Developmental Disabilities is sponsoring a March 12th event that brings together advocates, providers, consumers, policymakers and public employees to celebrate this year's theme, "Every child deserves a family home."

DHS Director Bruce Goldberg, M.D., will read the proclamation and present this year's Developmental Disability Champion Awards to a policymaker and an advocate who have increased awareness and advocated on behalf of people with disabilities and their families.

A Most Unlikely Hero Depicts Hidden Racism in Military

(SALEM) - Bruce Yamashita A new documentary, “A Most Unlikely Hero,” will be shown Sunday, Feb. 18th, at Willamette University. The free event includes a conversation with filmmaker Steve Okino and with Bruce Yamashita, who battled injustice in one of America’s most powerful institutions.

Hawaiian native Yamashita never intended to be an activist, but was bewildered when he ran into a relentless barrage of racial slurs and attacks after signing up for the United States Marine Corps. He waged a lonely, five-year “fight to get my dignity back,” unexpectedly uncovering evidence of widespread discrimination.

Keizer Police Holding Free Class on Oregon Driving Laws

The deadline to register is Wednesday, February 14th.

(KEIZER) - Keizer police department The Keizer Police Department will be presenting a free community presentation on Oregon traffic laws, including information on obtaining an Oregon Driver’s License, as part of the educational component to seek voluntary compliance in reducing dangerous driving behavior and motor vehicle crashes.

The class will cover the basic rules of the road, the most commonly observed traffic violations, the most dangerous driving behaviors and tips on how to prepare for the licensing test.

Heart Gallery of Oregon Opens Wednesday at State Capitol

Hundreds of Oregon children statewide are in need of permanent homes.

(SALEM) - Oregon State Capitol building The Heart Gallery of Oregon, a traveling photographic display featuring adoptable children, will open on Wednesday with a reception at the State Capitol
Galleria.

The exhibit features images capturing the spirit and personality of foster children needing permanent homes. Professional photographers from across the state have donated their time to the gallery, which features approximately 40 children.

Oregon Department of Revenue Offering Free Tax Help

Weekday sessions will be held at the Oregon Department of Revenue headquarters in Salem.

(SALEM) - tax form Free help is now available through April 17th for taxpayers who need assistance preparing their 2006 income tax returns.

Representatives from Oregon Department of Revenue and AARP will staff Tax Aide sessions in Salem and Woodburn.

They will help prepare basic state and federal income tax returns for senior and low-income taxpayers.
