OHSU Leads Team to Prevent Cardiomyopathy Through Gene Correction

Study in Nature demonstrates method for repairing genes in human embryos that prevents inherited diseases

(PORTLAND, Ore./PRNewswire/) - OHSU-CRISPR Scientists have demonstrated an effective way of using a gene-editing tool to correct a disease-causing gene mutation in human embryos and stop it from passing to future generations.

The new technique uses the gene-editing tool CRISPR to target a mutation in nuclear DNA that causes hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Tobacco Use Declining But Laws Increasing

Treating adults over 18 like children, Oregon will be the third state in the Nation to raise the legal age to buy tobacco to 21.

(SALEM, Ore.) - tobacco laws over 21 Smoking cigarettes is bad for you. The Oregon Legislature voted on behalf of Oregon citizens recently to "protect kids from tobacco addiction and save lives" by voting to prohibit the sale of tobacco products to anyone under 21.

That's right. A full-fledged adult in the state of Oregon over the age of 18 will no longer be able to buy cigarettes (or any tobacco products) as of January 1, 2018.

The way Oregon measures student’s science ability is set for a dramatic change.

(SALEM, Ore.) - school testing The Oregon Assessment of Knowledge and Skills, known as the OAKS, has for some time been the primary way of assessing a student’s abilities in a number of core subjects such as English, science and math.

The new "Smarter Balanced" tests have proved controversial in Oregon since their introduction last year, regarded as unnecessarily difficult and time consuming; some estimates put the average completion time for the exam at around six hours.
