Oregon Congressional Delegation Calls For Expedited Federal Disaster Declaration

White House declaration crucial for aid to Oregon counties hardest hit by January storms

(WASHINGTON DC) - President Barack Obama Today, the entire Oregon congressional delegation wrote to request that President Obama expedite approval of a federal disaster declaration to help communities recover from damage inflicted by severe winter storms.

The declaration, first requested in a February 16 letter from Governor John Kitzhaber to President Obama, was followed up by today’s bipartisan letter to the President.

650 Missing After Catastrophic Flood Strikes Philippine Islands

Experts warn that the death toll will be significantly higher before it is over.

(MINDANAO, Philippines) - Sendong flood hits Philippines Flashfloods that were triggered by tropical storm Sendong hit Cagayan de Oro City Saturday morning in the Philippines, leaving in its wake total devastation in many areas of Mindanao. The number of casualty continues to rise with death toll placed at 652, and nearly 800 are still missing.

Experts warn that the vast number of missing people could drive the death toll to more than 1400.

The report also says most of the oiled birds found during the spill were euthanized rather than rehabilitated.

Magnitude 6.9 Strikes Peru`s Capitol

(LIMA, Peru) - Peru earthquake map Southern Peru was shaken by an earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale; buildings rocked and swayed in the country's capitol Lima, home of 8.5 million people, but fortunately no injuries or major damage has been reported.

The US Geological Survey confirms that the temblor, which was initially reported as a magnitude 7.0 quake, was centered 51 km (31 miles) SSW of Ica, Peru, the scene of a terrible earthquake in 2007.
