Fire Crews Battle Wildfire Near Detroit

Citizens are asked to remain clear of the affected area so that crews can get in and attack the fire.

(SALEM, Ore.) - A fire was reported in the upper Elk Creek drainage area around 6:00 p.m. Wednesday evening, approximately 8 miles southwest of the town of Detroit, and about 2 miles west of Slate Rock.

The fire was estimated to be 35 acres in size. Fire resources are responding to the location at this time.

Body Found in Detroit Lake Identified as 60-Year Old Idanha Man‏

From all indications it appears the victim suffered from a medical issue and fell into the lake while fishing.

(DETROIT, Ore.) - The Marion County Sheriff's Office responded to the report of a body in Detroit Lake near the Breitenbush River Friday. Lt. Sheila Lorance says fishermen found the body and immediately called 911.

"When deputies arrived, they were able to remove the body from the lake and it was identified as 60-year old Harold Buckles of Idanha," Lorance said.

According to his family, Mr. Buckles went fishing on June 22nd, 2009, four days earlier, and had not been seen since.

Truck Crash Spills Glass Blocking Highway 22 West of Detroit

Clean-up efforts may continue into Friday morning.

(DETROIT, Ore.) - Clean up efforts are underway following a minor injury commercial truck rollover crash on Highway 22 about four miles west of Detroit. The truck was transporting sheets of mirrored glass that spilled onto the highway.

Oregon State Police Senior Trooper Doug Brown says at approximately 4:00 p.m. a commercial truck driven by Dave Chavez, whose age was not available, of Cave Junction, lost control and rolled, spilling the load of glass onto the highway.

Pipes Strewn Across Lanes Closes Oregon Highway 22

Load of Pipe Partially Blocks Highway 22E west of Detroit Following Truck Crash

(DETROIT, Ore.) - A late Tuesday commercial truck crash resulted in approximately 400 feet of Highway 22E west of Detroit being partially blocked for several hours by a spilled load of plastic water pipe, police said.

The driver was not injured and was cited. Police investigators believe he was trying to negotiate a curve and crossed over the oncoming lane onto the south shoulder of the highway.

Keizer CERT Members Continue Assistance of Detroit and Idanha Residents

Keizer CERT Executive Director Greg Biben, said that his CERT members are highly motivated people who are always looking for way to help others and use their training.

(KEIZER, Ore.) - The Keizer Community Emergency Response Team was activated and dispatched on Wednesday to the cities of Detroit and Idanha, Oregon.

The team spent Wednesday and Thursday assisting residents with snow removal following the largest snow accumulation recorded in decades those cities.

Keizer CERT Team Members Respond to Snowbound Detroit

The coordinator for Marion County CERT groups hopes new CERT teams are formed.

(KEIZER, Ore.) - The Keizer Citizen Emergency Response Team has been dispatched to the Idanha and Detroit area east of Salem to assist residents who are under feet of snow. The group is trained through the Keizer Fire Department and their recent activation to service was called by Marion County Emergency Management to help with relief efforts for homeowner's in regions.

Stephanie Cooke with the Keizer CERT Team says the people really need the assistance, "At this point, residents have no one to help remove snow from roofs that can sometimes be large amounts as we saw today in Idanha. Other relief groups are unwilling to help because of liabilities and lack of training."

Oregon Guard Soldiers Helping Residents in snowbound Detroit and Idanha

Unusually heavy snowfall accumulated in the cities of Detroit and Idanha as a series of snowstorms swept through the region in recent weeks, and the forecast calls for more snow.

(DETROIT, Ore.) - Twenty seven soldiers of the Oregon National Guard arrived in Idhana today to assist the snowbound community in its effort to recover from weeks of unusually heavy snowfall.

Upon arrival, senior members of the citizen-soldier contingent met with mayors Idanha and Detroit as well as officials from Marion and Linn Counties to lay out plans for supporting both communities.

Oregon National Guard Aids Detroit and Idanha Communities

In December, the Oregon Guard assisted in the response and recovery phases of severe winter storms that struck the northwest part of the state with high wind and rains.

(DETROIT, Ore.) - The Oregon National Guard today will help people in Idanha and Detroit climb out from several feet of snow after a series of heavy snowfalls buried the communities in recent weeks.

Slides and Unstable Snowpack Keep U.S. 20 at Santiam Pass Closed

ODOT advises motorists to avoid traveling through the Cascade passes today because of expectations of heavy snowfall. Other conditional closures are possible if conditions worsen.

(DETROIT, Ore.) - U.S. 20 will remain closed from milepost 75 to milepost 80 for most of the day because of the snow slides that occurred at about 6:30 AM. In addition, there is a high probability of more slides from slopes above the highway due to the unstable snowpack coupled with blizzard conditions and high wind gusts.

ODOT crews with snow blowers and snow plows are removing the slide debris that came down this morning, but it is snowing so hard that as soon as crews clear a lane, it quickly becomes snowed over again.
