Chinese Detain Two Tibetan Buddhist Nuns Over Protest

The two women are believed to have been taken to the local Kardze detention center.

(KATHMANDU, Tibet) - Tibetan Buddhist nuns In a rare challenge to China's massive security presence in Tibet, two Buddhist nuns have staged a public protest in Sichuan province before being taken into custody, according to several witnesses have told Radio Free Asia.

The nuns, identified as 32-year old Bumo Lhaga and 30-year old Sonam Dekyi, belong to the Drakar nunnery in Kardze [in Chinese, Ganzi] prefecture, Sichuan province. On April 23rd, around 1:00 PM, they handed out leaflets in Kardze town center calling for the return of Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, the sources told RFA's Tibetan service.

(HONG KONG) - New York Times researcher Zhao Yan A Beijing-based news researcher for The New York Times and cutting-edge Chinese investigative reporter has called for greater press freedom in China following his release from a three-year jail term, Radio Free Asia reports.

“There is not enough press freedom now,” Zhao Yan, who was jailed for fraud after charges of “revealing state secrets” were withdrawn, told RFA’s Mandarin service. “A law enshrining such freedoms should be enacted,” he told reporter Xin Yu shortly before leaving for the United States.

(KATHMANDU, Tibet) - Jamyang Kyi of Tibet Chinese authorities in Tibet have arrested a leading Tibetan writer, television producer, and performer in the midst of a major crackdown on anti-Chinese protests in the region, Radio Free Asia reports.

Plainclothes state security officers escorted Jamyang Kyi from her office at state-owned Qinghai TV on April 1st, an authoritative source told RFA’s Tibetan service. "She never returned," a source in Siling [in Chinese, Xining] said.

Protesters in France Douse Olympic Torch in Support of Tibet

The group Reporters Without Borders isn't letting China off the hook for human rights violations.

(PARIS, France) - Hundreds of demonstrators gathered at the Eiffel Tower for the passing of the Olympic Torch say the world will be aware of China's military crackdown in Tibet. The protesters were able to put the torch out as it made its way through the French capitol.

The demonstrators say it is ridiculous to allow Beijing to pretend it is a fair and open nation as the Communist driven Asian giant cracks down on peaceful protesters in both Tibet and in the Muslim province of Xinjiang, where residents voiced support of the Dali Lama and Tibet.

Death Toll Unknown After Chinese Police Fire on Tibetan Protesters

Those killed by Chinese paramilitary forces include several women and a young boy.

(KATHMANDU, Tibet) - Chinese paramilitary police Paramilitary police in China’s southwestern Sichuan province fired on a crowd of Tibetan protesters demanding the release of two detained monks, killing and wounding an unknown number of people, Radio Free Asia reports.

At about 8:00 PM last night, paramilitary People’s Armed Police fired on a crowd of several hundred monks from the Tongkor monastery in Kardze and several hundred residents, witnesses told RFA’s Tibetan service.

Fresh Protest Reported in Tibetan Capital

The March 29th protest coincided with a day-long visit to Lhasa by foreign diplomats, who came at the invitation of Chinese authorities.

(KATHMANDU, Tibet) - Students stand in solidarity in Tibet Witnesses in the Tibetan capital, Lhasa, say fresh protests erupted there Saturday afternoon despite a massive Chinese police and paramilitary presence, Radio Free Asia reports.

Witnesses told RFA's Tibetan service that several hundred Tibetans rallied around 2:00 PM on March 29th, beginning in the area near Center Beijing Road. Shops near the central post office on Lhasa Youth Road were closed, as security forces surrounded the Tibetan residential areas in Barkhor, Kama Kunsang, Ramoche, and the Jokhang temple.

"In the Tsekhog [Zeku] area in Huangnan prefecture, the monks are continuing their peaceful protests as of March 20th," a protester told an Amdo dialect reporter from RFA’s Tibetan service.
