Gurgle, Gurgle

Down the drain...

(CALGARY, Alberta) - Money down the drain Sometimes, late at night, when it is very quiet, I can hear a faint gurgling sound. I wondered what it was and finally realized that it comes in my south window. It turns out to be coming from across the 49th parallel only a hundred or so miles away.

It’s the ominous and unfortunate sound of The Untied States going down the drain.

Canada Elects

In spite of what you may have heard, Canada is not turning conservative.

(CALGARY, Alberta) - Canada maple leaf As some of you know, Canada held a national election on May 2. This is a brief note to throw some cold water on those of you who mistakenly believe that Canada is “turning conservative”.

The conservatives only increased their share of the popular by 1.96%, it wasn’t so much that the Conservatives won, but that the Liberals lost.

Taxes - Choosing How To Be Gored

The voters should have a direct say in whether they want this tax or not.

(GOLD RIVER, B.C.) - HST tax The election season is upon, as all probably are aware. Kremastics

For the last half century or more the American people have been damned fools. It may be too late to do anything about it; in fact it almost certainly is too late.

(CALGARY, Alberta) - Uncle Sam in surgery Many, if not most, Americans are in serious denial. The country they know and love is almost finished. As Lincoln famously said: “A house divided against itself cannot stand,” and America has never been so divided.

The Democrats hate and fear the Republicans, and the Republicans hate and fear the Democrats.

A Note on the American Psyche

In one of my stories last year I reviewed Shock Doctrine by fellow Canadian Naomi Klein. She recounted in depressing detail the horrors visited on other nations by American policies—almost always on behalf of business.

(CALGARY, Alberta) - America With all the negative commentary on my “Shutdown” piece, I would just like to clear the air on what I write and why I write it.

Note: Rather than qualify every statement let me make clear that when I say “Americans”, I mean most or the vast majority of American citizens, but not all.

Pay Teachers More

This update is to note that in nearly thirty years, nothing has changed!

(CALGARY, Alberta) - Teachers Last month Jerry West wrote a piece titled (“US Extremism Not Surprising") As part of the comments, the relative efficacy of teachers came up.

When the subject of teachers and unions appeared I offered this analysis: “Jerry and Kevin: The two of you are now arguing about money going into education. I think money is, in a fundamental sense, the least important factor...'

Afghanistan: The `Great Game` of Deceit

The list goes on and on for all the failures that Afghanistan has endured...

(SEATTLE) - Salem-News.com The Viceroy of India, Lord Curzon, at the beginning of the 20th century aptly described Afghanistan as “a piece on the chessboard on which is being played out the game for domination of the world.”

At that time, the Great Game was being played between Czarist Russia and Imperialist Britain. At the end of the 20th century, however, the contestants were the USSR, and the USA.

Economics as Pseudoscience

Modern economics is based almost entirely on myths first pronounced by the 18th century moral philosopher, Adam Smith.

(CALGARY, Alberta) - Economy frustration If any field of study is a pseudoscience, it's economics. As Leonard Silk, late economics columnist for the New York Times (an economist himself) once wrote:

Leaders Must Face The Reality of The Environment

Becoming sustainable will be very painful for many of us, but not as much as it will if we defy nature and have it forced on us. Leaders must face this.

(GOLD RIVER, B.C.) - BC flag The Liberal and New Democratic parties are coming into the home stretch on their run to choose a new leader. The Libs will pick one this weekend, and BC will have a new premier.

Seven weeks later the NDP will choose, and who knows how long before the new premier decides to call an election. Speculation is sometime before the 2013 mandated date.
