TCE-Related Toxic Waste in Irvine Much Worse Than Previously Revealed

A plume of the highly toxic chemical trichloroethylene that originated from the El Toro Marine base, has migrated beneath most of Irvine.

(IRVINE, Calif.) - Salem-News.com Salem-News.com began a series of reports in May of 2008 on the toxic waste contamination of the now-closed El Toro Marine Corps Air Station in Irvine, California.

New information released today suggests that far more of Irvine is potentially contaminated with TCE than even those of us who are studying the issue closely, realized.

Hundreds Escort Oregon Military Officer Killed in Iraq (VIDEO)

A military pilot from Beaverton who died in a helicopter crash is escorted home with extreme honor.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Photos Today Oregon welcomed home Chief Warrant Officer-2 Joshua Tillery who was killed in late January in Iraq, and escorted his remains to Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home.

Q Madp of IraqWarHeroes.org photographed the somber event and said the turnout was much better than expected for a middle of the week event.

Joshua Tillery, an Army helicopter pilot from Oregon, was one of four soldiers killed in a helicopter crash January 26th 2009 in northern Iraq. 31-year old Joshua Tillery served under the command of the U.S. Army's well-known 10th Mountain Division.

El Toro Marines Ask Navy for Help

Veterans start on-line petition to request the Navy's Public Health Center to evaluate the risks of occupational exposure to TCE and other contaminants at MCAS El Toro.

(SOMERDALE, N.J.) - MCAS El Toro bull and Navy logo El Toro Marine veterans are asking the Navy Marine Corps Public Health Center, Occupational Health Department, to address the occupational risks of exposure to Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), radionuclides and other contaminants at former MCAS El Toro.

On January 2, 2009, the Agency of Toxic Substances Registry (ATSDR) recommended that the Navy be contacted to address the potential exposure to workers to chemicals used in the occupational environment at former MCAS El Toro.

The Navy needs to rethink and abandon large parts of this entire proposal. The potential effects of new and increased military activity off the coast of Oregon could result in a general degradation of the environment, be fatal to wildlife and detrimental to the human quality of life.

Marines in `Catch 22` with Government

The VA is not going to wake-up tomorrow morning and realize the necessity of approving Presumptive Disability for TCE exposure. Congressional support is needed to make this change.

(SOMERDALE, N.J.) - Salem-News.com The Feres doctrine prevents veterans from filing tort suits for injuries from exposure to contaminants on active duty.

Even when the government is clearly negligent, the veteran’s only alternative is to file a VA disability claim.

The ‘catch’ is that the VA requires evidence of exposure, medical records supporting the injury or illness, and a nexus statement from a medical care provider linking the injury or illness to military service.

Coast Guard Airlifts Crewman 150 Miles Offshore (VIDEO)

The Coast Guard conducted a medevac of a crewmember off the 623-foot container ship Dapenghai 150 miles west from the entrance of the Columbia River Saturday.

(SEATTLE) - Crewman being airlifted from the 623-foot container ship Dapenghai In this video released by the Coast Guard, an HH-60 helicopter crew from Air Station Astoria, Ore., conducts a medevac of a crewmember off the 623-foot container ship Dapenghai 150 miles west from the entrance of the Columbia River. The rescue was completed Saturday, Jan. 17th 2009.

Officials say the rescue helicopter crew transported the crewmember to an awaiting Life Flight helicopter crew at Astoria Regional Airport.

Around 8:30 AM Saturday, the Coast Guard Air Station Astoria, Ore., launched an HH-60 rescue helicopter crew to the scene, after receiving a report of a 36-year-old male crewmember suffering a possible stroke.

(SOMERDALE, N.J.) - Robert O'Dowd This is the second report in the continuing investigation of the contamination at former MCAS El Toro. A prior report addressed issues related to the possible contamination of El Toro’s base wells.

The focus of this report is the government’s response of January 2, 2009, to requests from Marines to evaluate the risk of their possible exposure to trichlorothylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE) vapors in the hangars and buildings of the Marine Wing Support Group 37, the most industrialized portion of the base.
