Beavers Drop Series Finale To Washington State

The Beavers will return to action on Tuesday, May 19th when they face civil war rival Oregon in a midweek non-conference game at Goss Stadium.

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Ryan Ortiz went 3-for-5 and hit his second home run of the weekend, and Rob Folsom went 2-for-4 and also homered but it was not enough as Washington State scored the go-ahead run in the ninth inning to defeat Oregon State 7-6 in the rubber match of their Pac-10 series on Sunday.

Ortiz collected RBI in three of his five at-bats. With the Beavers trailing 6-5 in the seventh inning, the Oregon State catcher led the inning off with his fourth home run of the year, it going to right field, to tie the game at six. The three RBI-effort was his fifth of the year, and the three hits gave Ortiz his team-leading 22nd multi-hit game of the year.

As the second hitter of the game for the Beavers, Folsom lifted a pitch from Washington State (28-22, 16-8 Pacific-10 Conference) starter David Stilley over the left field wall for the first home run of his career and the first by a Beaver in the first inning. His single in the fourth inning gave the junior his fourth multi-hit effort of 2009.

With two outs in the second inning, Carter Bell singled through the right side to give himself a three-game hitting streak. He then stole second base and scored on a single by John Wallace to give the Beavers a 2-0 lead.

Michael Miller singled and scored in the third and fourth innings for his eighth multi-hit game of the year. The Oregon State right fielder has gone 4-for-7 and scored four runs in his past two games, both multi-hit efforts.

Jorge Reyes took the mound for the Beavers for his team-leading 12th start of the year. The righty retired the first nine hitters he faced, and the Cougars were unable to get a ball out of the infield until a fly out by Ryan Peterson, the eighth hitter of the game.

Reyes’ hot start cooled off in the fourth when the Cougars struck for three runs. All told, Reyes went five innings and allowed six hits and five runs; however only three of those runs were earned.

Jeremy Johnson got his fifth win of the season in relief for Washington State, pitching three innings and allowing just the home run to Ortiz. Four Cougars had two hits, while Shea Vucinich hit a two-run home run in the sixth.

With the game tied at six in the ninth, Cody Bartlett led the inning off with a single and was moved to second by a sacrifice bunt by Gary Kuykendall. Jay Ponciano followed that with a single to center field to drive in Bartlett from second for the go-ahead run.

The Beavers will return to action on Tuesday, May 19th when they face civil war rival Oregon in a midweek non-conference game at Goss Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.

Oregon State Notes: Before the game, Oregon State honored seniors John Wallace, Koa Kahalehoe, Kyle Foster, Mark Grbavac, and Logan Boyd, who were playing their final weekend game at Goss Stadium… Rob Folsom’s home run in the first gave him a three game hitting streak… Jorge Reyes has struck out at least three hitters in each of his 13 appearances this year… The crowd of 2,959 gave the Beavers their 11th crowd of 2,500 or more this season…
