15th Annual Global Marijuana March Brings Crowds to Potland

Oregonians put one foot in front of the other to end marijuana prohibition.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Rep. Blumenauer Nearly a thousand people of all ages and physical abilities marched through the streets of downtown Portland today for the 15th annual Global Cannabis March under cloudy skies and enduring intermittent rain.

There were musicians playing, people singing, kazoos humming. It was a colorful and entertaining time for one and all.

Oregon`s Oldest Beekeeper, Gone but Not Forgotten

Remembering 99-year old Oliver Wendell Petty, A Beekeeper’s Beekeeper
June 9, 1914 — April 6, 2014

(SALEM) - Oliver Petty As an early beekeeper in the Willamette Valley, Oliver Petty was instrumental in convincing farmers to rent bee hives to improve crop yields. Prior to that time, most beekeepers made their living by selling honey.

“Oliver, in his beekeeping career, had seen things that only we can dream about- thousands of acres of hairy vetch blooming all over the Willamette Valley and other bee forage untouched,” said beekeeper Dirk Olson.

Salem Tattoo Artist Receives Award at 2014 Body Art Expo

With over 200 tattoo artists on site, the variations of body art were endless.

(RIDGEFIELD, Wash.) - tattoo expo The Body Art Expo, the World’s Largest Tattoo Convention, took place last weekend at the Clark County Fairgrounds. The tattoo world came together for three days, and Oregon Body-Art Center from Salem was there.

It was the perfect place for those with some “killer ink” to show off to the folks who would appreciate it the most, and maybe get another tattoo, or a piercing, by some of the best in the business.

Lunar Eclipse Creates Stunning Blood Moon for Sky Gazers

Millions of people around the world were watching the sky late last night, hoping to catch a glimpse of the "blood moon"

(SALEM) - blood moon The "Blood moon" is a sight only witnessed during a total lunar eclipse, when the Earth spins between the sun and the moon.
The shadow of the Earth catches the refracted light from the sun, and the moon has a reddish, almost copper-color sheen cast upon it.

Though the blood moon was to be most prominent in North and South America, most of the United States was cloud-covered and the spectacle was hidden from view.

Murderer Josh Cavett has his Day in Court

Whether it be a plea for 25 years or "True Life", Cavett is going up the river.

(PORTLAND, OR) - Josh Cavett in custody Almost exactly 6 months after he committed murder, Josh Cavett went before Multnomah County Judge LaBarre and the District Attorney today to formally present his prospective plea deal.

On October 12th, 2013, Josh Cavett shot his 27-year old wife at point blank in front of her two little girls, leaving the 5-year old to call for help. He snatched their 2-year old from the scene and put her at extreme risk, setting off an Amber Alert, until he was arrested.

Tragically, Jessie Cavett died a few hours later. The man she was divorcing, and had gotten a Restraining Order against to protect her and the children, has been in custody since late that same October night.

Honeybees Create a Buzz at Oregon Body-Art Center

A swarm of bees in the city is not a typical day in the neighborhood

(SALEM) - honeybee swarm gathering State Street and 17th in Salem is always a busy intersection, but today it was the honeybees that had the right of way.

A swarm of honeybees made its way to the tree just next to the building where the Oregon Body-Art Center is located. It is spring, and in the spring, honeybees do what they want.

Salem Saturday Market Showered with Fun

Spring is in the air, and it was in full bloom in downtown Salem this weekend.

(SALEM) - boy playing violin The opening day of Salem Saturday Market 2014 was a great success with 85 vendors welcoming old friends and new to the area’s biggest outdoor market. The skies were heavy laden with clouds, and rain was in the forecast, but the sun broke through and very few drops fell. Salemites were ready for the market, and turned out by the hundred, rain or shine, umbrellas in tow.

“There are a lot of new vendors this year, and almost twice as many on opening day as we had last year,” said Kerry Jackson, the assistant Marketing Director for Salem Saturday Market. “Everyone is very enthusiastic and looking forward to a terrific season.”

(DAYTON, Ore.) - Pirates Den For the last 50 years, the town of Dayton, Oregon has been the home of the Pirate’s Den café. It is located directly across from the High School, and has been a part of generations of students’ best homegrown memories.

Those of us that were there in its heyday recall pinball machines, and eventually foos-ball, and a juke box that would give you three songs for a quarter. So many songs were played repeatedly, but I don't recall anyone complaining. You can never have too much Zeppelin.

Malaysia Airlines Reports Lost Contact with Aircraft with 239 Souls Aboard

Malaysia Airlines Vice President of Operations Fuad Sharuji told CNN’s Anderson Cooper that the company has “no idea” where Malaysia 370 may be.

(SALEM) - missing plane Malaysia Airlines announced over Facebook that Subang air traffic control ‘lost contact’ with flight MH370 at 2:40am local time on March 8 (GMT +8 hours), about two hours after takeoff from the Malaysian capital.

The Boeing 777-200ER was operating Kuala Lumpur (KUL) – Beijing (PEK), and was due to land a Beijing at 6:30am local time the same day.

Bonnie King`s career is unique, she is one of the few media professionals who has extensive time in four relevant areas; radio, television, newspaper and Internet. She has been with Salem-News.com since August 2004.

Her television career began in 1988, at Lincoln City, Oregon`s cable TV station, TV 10, in dual roles as News Anchor and Sales/Promotion Director. This was a natural evolution of her journalistic aspirations, since she was first "bit by the bug" while serving as Editor in Chief of her high school yearbook for two years. She graduated from Bassist College in Portland, Oregon in 1986.

Bonnie has interviewed legends like Aaron Spelling, Hugh Miles and Peter Frampton; Nadia Komenich, the feisty Judge Mills Lane, and the stars from CHARMED, FELICITY, ROSWELL, 7TH HEAVEN and BUFFY the VAMPIRE SLAYER. She has interviewed Oregon`s governors and congressmen, and she was part of the award-winning NBC news crew that first spoke to Evander Holyfield the night of the notorious Tyson ear-biting incident.

Her first full length documentary, `Fallen Fortress at Cape Lookout` aired on Oregon Public Broadcasting in 1993, for which she was the Producer. She is presently working on two Oregon based historical documentaries, and is an integral force in civil and human rights causes.

Bonnie has served in a number of positions in the broadcast industry; TV Production Manager at KVWB (Las Vegas WB) and Producer/Director for the TV series "Hot Wheels in Las Vegas" (2 seasons); TV Promotion Director for KYMA (NBC), and KFBT (Ind.); Asst. Marketing Director (SUPERSHOPPER MAGAZINE); Director/Co-Host (Coast Entertainment Show); Promotion Director (KBCH/KCRF Radio); and, Newspapers In Education/Circulation Sales Manager (STATESMAN JOURNAL NEWSPAPER).

Bonnie has a depth of understanding that reaches further than just behind the scenes, and that thoroughness of her nature is demonstrated in the perseverance to correctly present each story with the wit and wisdom necessary to compel and captivate viewers.
