Coast Guard medevacs passenger from cruise ship

(ASTORIA, Ore.) - Aviation Survival Technician 2nd Class Obrien Starr-Hollow, Aviation Maintenance Technician 2nd Class Shawn McCann and Health Service Technician 1st Class Russell Whitman of Air Station Astoria, Ore., tend to a 69-year-old man medically evacuated from the cruise ship Bolendam with head and back injuries Sept. 24, 2010.

The man was taken to Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Ore., for treatment.

The Coast Guard conducted a medevac of a 69-year-old man from a cruise ship Friday, 100 miles west of the Columbia River entrance.

The physician aboard the 781-foot cruise ship Bolendam contacted the Thirteenth Coast Guard District command center at 1:30 p.m. to request a medical evacuation for an injured passenger.

An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Astoria, Ore., hoisted the passenger from the ship and transported him to Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Ore., where he was last listed in stable condition.
