Two Hunters Find Victim That Plunged 100 Feet off Cliff on ATV

Ironically, crash victim Philip Adamson says his brother is the murder victim who was recently discovered, dismembered, in the Columbia River.

Unlike the rider in the image, this man was not wearing a helmet and he is considered to be extremely fortunte to have survived

(ESTACADA) - Two bird hunters responded to calls for help Saturday around 6:30 PM and saved a recreational vehicle rider who had driven over a steep embankment and was seriously injured.

It happened on Forest Service Road 4610; near Squaw Lake, east of Estacada. After a brief search, the two bird hunters identified as Shane Turner, of Estacada and his hunting partner Rob Beguelin, of Mulino; headed toward the male voice calling for help some 18 miles from State Hwy 224; along a remote section of Forest Service Road 4610, east of Estacada.

Responding to these calls for help Shane Turner and Rob Beguelin located this severely injured, recreation vehicle rider, over an estimated 30' embankment. This patient was lying among boulders -- described as large as refrigerators.

They say there were no visible signs on the roadway that would indicate the rider had left the road.

Upon locating the victim, Shane Turner went for help while his hunting partner stayed with the injured rider.

Turner moved to a new location where he was able to obtain cell phone service and called 911, summoning help. Shane Turner met responding Sheriff's Deputy Jeffrey Juker, who guided rescue personnel to this remote rescue location.

Specialized rescuers from the American Medical Response Reach and Treat Team responded, and roped into to the patient to begin administering medical treatment.

With good fortune, this patient had landed 30 ft down on a rock shelf, on the east side of this Forest Service Road. The ATV he was riding at the time of the crash continued over an additional 100 foot drop, onto an additional rocky landing.

Additional manpower was requested to extricate this large-framed patient, suffering with severe back pain, from his precarious position.

Members representing Mountain Wave (radio communications) and Pacific Northwest Search and Rescue personnel were summoned to the scene to assist in the extrication from this rocky ledge. 12 rescue personnel were dedicated to this rescue mission.

This patient is identified as 44-year old Philip Scott Adamson, a resident of Estacada.

Ironically, Philip Adamson says he is the brother of the deceased male subject; who was recently discovered, dismembered, in the Columbia River. That case is being investigated in Multnomah County.

At the scene, Philip Scott Adamson told Deputy Juker he only recalls driving his ATV along this section of the Forest Service Road, on Saturday, at about 4:00 PM and for some unknown reason left the roadway. Adamson was having difficulty in recalling details of the actual crash, or how it happened. Adamson was not wearing a helmet at the time of this crash.

American Medical Response Paramedic, David Ewen said, "This guy is very fortunate he did not continue over the 100 ft. cliff with this ATV – and especially fortunate, the two hunters heard and responded to his calls for help –he was in the middle of nowhere!"

Due to the difficulty involved in extricating Adamson from the scene, combined with the necessity of traveling extra slow along this rugged, washboard roadway from the site, Adamson did not arrive at Legacy Emanuel Hospital, until approximately 3:42 AM this Sunday morning – almost 12 hours after his crash.

The ATV Adamson is reported to have been riding was not removed from the crash site. The hour was late in darkness, it is not a hazard and the focus of attention was dedicated to the patient.
